Hi all. I have had the vet out to my gelding to sort his passport. I know very little about him. My question is, the vet took hair for DNA testing and said there are 2 different types of passport I can apply for which she briefly explained but I didnt take in much though I know she said one was the Irish Horse Society. I'd like to find out his parentage if possible. Can anyone give me advice on the different passports and what way to go about having the DNA test? And what exactly can the DNA tests reveal? Im based in Northern Ireland. Thanks😁

If you can prove breeding you may be able to apply for a breed society passport. But if you can't you'll have to go for a generic PIO like Horse Sport Ireland. (Green cover is recorded breeding, white is unknown breeding and blue a mix) Unless you intend to show in a breed specific class the only real difference is in the price of the passport. I'm not sure - but stand to be corrected - if you have an animal of totally unknown parentage that DNA testing could actually identify a sire or Dam?
