Passports and loan horses?

You can let the passport company know that the horse is on loan and as such if anyone tries to change anything it will be flagged.

Personally I believe there should only be one PIO issuing passports as this would make the system much more effective on passports and would mean you could be more confident with loaning.

I've loaned twice - the first one the owner retained the passport, bringing it over if we had vaccs due or we travelled (she was transporting us)

second one - I hyave the passport (however I've basically assumed permenant ownership now - but thats a whole other story!)

I keep all my boys papers. He is 5 mins from my house though so can go whenever I like pretty much.

He's my horse, I see no need to give over valuable papers to someone who doesn't own him.

I have my loan horse's passport yes as it needs to be filled in for vacs etc... BUT I did also mention to his owner that he take a copy for his own records too, not that I can't be trusted as I can.

I would insist on having the passport of a horse I loaned. It legally has to stay with the horse.
In fact, our YO insists on holding all passports of all horses on the yard. We can see them whenever we ask for them and can take them away for a couple of days if we need to but she says she needs them in case she ever gets a visit from DEFRA or if anything happens to a horse and the vet has to come out. I'm very happy with that (but I trust our YO implicitly and it's not like a "normal" livery yard).

I loan my horse and I have her passport, but then her owner lives in the Falkland islands so makes sense. Good job too as i found out her vaccinations were out of date as she had the last 2 late!
