I have just bought a pony who is CHAPS registered, it states on the passport the owner can’t be under 18, I am 16 (which is the age to legally own a horse ffs!) so what should I do? He can be registered in my dad’s name but considering I have paid for him I would like to be his legal owner, the sales receipt doesn’t specify who he has been sold to either which I’m assuming is standard as he is from a very reputable dealer. Can I register him with another society that allows a 16yo to be a passport owner? Thank you!

This is an interesting conundrum!

I'm surprised the dealer sold you the horse, they are a business and its a business transaction but you need to be over 18 to sign a contract and it be legally binding. I'd imagine you'll struggle with insurance or registering with a vet in your own name.

Anyway, I'd call/email the passport office and ask, they might be willing to put your name on with your dad undersigning. Alternatively the BHS don't have a minimum age for their passports.

You can't register the same microchip with two different passport agencies so registering him with another passport issuer isn't an option, I'm afraid. The UK government website states: "You’re breaking the law if you apply for a replacement or duplicate passport when the original is not lost."

Passports don't provide proof of ownership anyway, they only identify the horse. I'd register him in your dad's name for now and change it when you turn 18 if you still feel strongly about it then.
