Hi all,
We have 2 shetlands, about 2yrs old, one has a patch on the side of her head, bare of hair and is a bit scabby, there is a picture here:-

Sorry it's abit fuzzy.. It does not bother her at all, never seen her scratch / rub it. It is not caused by the head collar as she has been without a collar for 5 weeks up to yesterday.
Any ideas what it may be and how to treat it? it seems to be spreading slowly.
Thanks alot!
Andrew

Agree with EKW. That does look dodgy. Don't be tempted to try any self help with products containing tea tree and/or aloe vera as these substances aim to help fast healing of wounds etc. If it is a true sarcoid, it's a form of skin cancer and you don't want to accidentally help the cancer cells grow. Thuja cream at 30C potency (health food or vet shops or on line) is gentle and sometimes works, but it certainly does no harm. Warts are often mistaken for sarcoids - if it's a wart your shetland has then I'd leave it alone. Young horses and ponies (what age is your pony?) often get enormous numbers of warts on their faces but they are harmless and disappear spontaneously as the immune system matures. Even if it is a true sarcoid, the best thing is often to leave it alone unless it is being made worse by tack, or is growing very fast, or bleeds a lot.

I'd get the vet out to identify exactly what that patch is before you think through the alternatives. Fingers crossed.

Hey is there any lumps or protrusions from it? If its just flat it looks like what my cob gets and I find dermasol, good fly repellant and some loose powder. As he only started getting it when kept near cattle and chickens. I think its like a fly or mite condition. But that's only if there's nothing protruding from the skin or no lumps, which from the picture there doesn't appear to be.
