I’ve had the vet out yesterday and they’ve given some cream to apply but we can’t understand what’s caused it
Two patches of sore skin on the inside of the back hind, no other sore patches or issues, legs trimmed back altho not clipped as living out. No other marks.
Vet recommended deosect which we will do once the skin is less inflamed but I’ve never seen this before and wonder what people use to help with itchy legs?

I was using a branded pig oil type thing and now I’m wondering if it’s a reaction to that?

I dont personally like putting an oil-based cream on sore skin as i see it acting like a barrier stopping the sore from ‘breathing’.
Some horses react to pig oil, so maybe its got worse due to a reaction.
I use aloe vera on sores....ita anti-bac and anti-inflamm and also soaks deep into the dermis, and allows the sore to breathe as its water-based, so you could try that.
My mare had a weepy sore on her belly, from a bite i think that turned very sore, skin looked very red and bare, and the aloe vera was wonderous is healing it, drying it out. Applied once a day and within a week it was dry and skin healing well.

I wonder if youve got mites, mange or ringworm? Its winter, the warmth of the horse is ideal for these things to set up shop. Likely on the legs due to more mud in winter.
A skin scrape test can reveal cause if it doesnt clear up easily.

Thank you, I’ll ask my vet if we can do a skin scrape.
I will get some aloe gel as that will help with healing, I hadn’t thought of that
