Although its lovely to see the threads of all you beautiful young things on georgous horses in matching accessories, you need us less than glamorous people to make you look good.
Here is my boy sporting his most patched rug......however I will later find some pics of the red one patched in black. Im a total skinflint and could nt bear to throw this one week old rug out so it got some major patchwork..the red one is patched on top of patches.......but to be honest still does nt look too bad.
Anyone else as tight as me?

Im desperately trying to find some navy material to patch my rug as I refuse to pay the same amount it cost me to repair it! Used to use the Hydrophane kits but they seem to have stopped them :(

I always get my rugs patched...cheaper than buying new ones & watching them get shredded again. Besides they only get filthy again. My.boy has never had matchy-matchy apart from green travel boots & rug that are 15yrs old from first horse! :-)

Yes, I have a pile of rugs waiting to be fixed. Two need surcingles sewing back on, two need surcingles shortened and one needs a lose leg strap resewn. In the past I've used the detachable neck covers that come with the rug, to make patches to fix the rugs as I don't use the neck covers.

How big does it have to be? I may have a small patch spare

I used to before, mum would buy cheap pony rugs off ebay (as in £5-10) so I could cut and sew/stick on my own rugs because one of mine would shred his monthly:D

I don't do rugs, but my harness and saddlery is constantly being repaired. I have a desk in the living room full of saddlers tools and random straps, ready to mend the next casualty.

As OP says - someone has to make the matchy-matchy people look good.

You're better off with patched rugs, especially if patches don't match the original colour, it makes them less likely to be nicked off the horses.
I used to wash and repair up to 250 rugs a year and it was always the decent looking ones that got snatched, in fact one riding school couldn't wait until their horses ripped their new rugs and when they did, they relieved a sigh of relief and got me to patch totally different colours on it, they were always losing decent rugs off their horses overnight in the fields. So, the more unsightly your rugs are and easily identifiable as well as unsaleable the better!

yes just what we have allways wanted......a patch swapping thread....ive got loads of black if anyone needs them thanks to the lightweight which my horse routinely did a stripping act with!

I patch mine. Lots of rugs come with a patch to do this, and my local Tack Shop sells kits, I saw them today but did not note what make.

I am looking after a serial rug wrecker, every day he comes in with another chunk out of it ! I keep sewing it up, and have patched it up with duck tape sewn in the gaps :p I will eventually give up and get another rug, but it is his HW and they are expensive! so I might just chuck a LW on top to keep the rain out.

Just bought some 'super strength glue' to patch the rip on my boys new rug!!!!! hopefully will put in little patch from old rug and glue...... hope it works. Will let you know.

Everything is patchy-patchy in this household

currently sporting jods with patched knee and down gilet patched with bit of old fleece rug (and rather fetching they look too!)
large rugs are remade into smaller rugs - the dog gets any old small ones remade as basket blankets
TO neck cover has been relined with very fetching floral-design satin (it is used on a very pretty mare.....)
good bits of old bridles are 'cannibalised' to make up new bridles
trimmed down some large leather brushing boots to fit pony
even had my long riding boots patched by our local cobbler when they cracked across instep - the thought of breaking in a new pair is just too too painful..........

I've just discovered Stormsure glue, brilliant for mending and patching rugs. They have a video on YouTube to show you how to do it.

When they're tears I just sew them up tight myself and none have leaked at all - even along the top of the back. Nobody has tried to steal them to my knowledge...:)

Sounds rather stylish to me.

Yep, me. Why replace when you can repair? I 'rescue' rugs that others throw away and depending on the severity of damage, will either repair or recycle it. Material is used to patch other rugs, buckles and surcingles etc. cut off to be used as replacements. In fact I recycle as many bits off the rug as possible. Just as well as we have a serial rug destroyer. Latest destruction, he's ripped the back end off a premier equine rug which he then managed to wriggle out of. Found in a very muddy part of the field with breast buckles and surcingles still fastened? Will attempt to repair this but looking at it, it may just be beyond repair. He has already broken a clip on his replacement rug which was a repaired 'rescue'.
I also repair halters, can't bear to throw them away when I know I can repair them.
Probably why I have about 30 halters for 4 horses!

I'm also a 60's baby and am happy to make do and mend. When I was in the position of needing to replace a complete wardrobe for three horses I had great fun choosing this year's fashion styles and having each horse in its own colour. Then I priced up the same rugs in last year's colours and not all matching and it came to half the price. I bought the mismatched lot! I re-cycle and re-use but must confess to having a whole pile of bits that might come in handy for mending.

I bought one horse from a 21 year old girl and was most impressed to see that she'd repaired everything she could. She even passed over a couple of headcollars she'd mended.

I'm a late 80s baby and I'd still rather repair than replace. Rugs aren't cheap, I can think if other things I'd rather waste money on. But thankfully madam seems to appreciate the warmth so doesn't try a spectacular great escape. She's also a mardy mare, so if anyone dared attack her warm rug she'd give them what for. The horses all have sense and even the usual rug wrecker won't dare.
