Okay, so I've got a patchy dun pony and a big festival show coming up in 3weeks..Not good.
Her lovely dun summer coat's coming through her horrible grey/blue coloured clipped coat in awful looking patches. I don't want to clip again to ruin her coat for summer, so is there anything I can do apart from face up to the shame?

Hi, i know how your feeling, got a dun who making me worry my head off, got royal windsor in 7 weeks, and its cost me a fortune to get him regitered ect, and hes taking his time with his coat!!!.

Ive been putting him out naked when its sunny and thats really helped.

ive also put him on baileys outshine 2 weeks ago and the coat that is coming through quite quickly now looks really glossy!! And i rubber curry comb and body brush like mad for about 30 minutes a day at the moment!!

I think everyone with a dun is in the same boat! She was fully clipped out so all the hair I've to worry about is the legs.
I've been doing the same, putting her out rugless in the sun and that's what seemed to start it coming through, just on her neck, withers and bum though :(
How do you find Baileys Outshine?

Yer cos at work ive a coloured and black horse and theyve got full summer coats already!!
Yer rugless has helped him loads, but the weather hasnt been as good this week!!!

Yer find the baileys outshine has really helped he looks very well and his coat is starting to has a real glow even though its changing at the mintue, and although its expensive because mines native i feed the just under the recomended amout and its still having affect.

So she had a hunter clip rather than a full clip?

if she was on a full clip you wouldn't have a problem.

what makes you say that? i cant see how that would make a difference seeing as a hunter clip really isnt that much difference other than a patch on the back.

Get her out naked on the hot day and rubber curry comb like mad!

i think what the op is saying is what has grown back since her last clip isnt moulting out very well and patches of summer coat are coming through giving her a patchy appearance, so close to a show.

my dun is nearly her summer colour :D

her whole head is done, all her body is done, nearly done on her neck, just some white patches on her belly round her tail and under her neck, everywhere that has had a draft from not being covered by a rug! hers comes through quicker and better the more we rug her!

i wouldn't worry too much lots of duns are patchy at this time :)

your making me panic now my dun has no summer coat yet :( he is still his greyish winter colour :( not that I have any shows coming up that it would matter for but I want my golden pony back. Would it make a diffrence to his coat growing back that it was his first time being clipped?

I feel your pain - my new show cob currently resembles a brindle dog, mousey brown where he was clipped (hunter clip like yours) with the new coat coming through jet black!

I am keeping him un-rugged as much as poss during the day, and put him on blue chip balancer a few weeks ago so at least the black is coming through very shiny and soft, but his first show is a week on Sun, so am just keeping fingers crossed!

Before I bought this cob I had a dun section d and his coat changes were a nightmare, ranging from dark grey, too dapples, then finally to a golden dun by around may time. Even more bizarre he would go pink when first clipped in autumn...not a pleasant site!

Good luck at your show, and try not to worry too much as I doubt many horses will be in their full summer coats yet.

2nd the turnout naked as much as poss and rubber curry like mad :). My boy is black, I chaser clipped just after new year and it was too late for him. The other horses on the yard have been moulting badly for weeks, some almost have summer coats, my boy hasnt started moulting properly until today :D when I turned him out naked and rubber curried to help get rid of the mud. Finally, his coat is coming out :)
