There's a very slim possibility that i might be given a Patey riding hat, (of the dressage/hunting cap type)..
It's brand new

But it doesn't fit

It's too small

Does anyone know how much scope for change there is, if it were to altered???

Not sure if they can be altered TBH - but what size is it?!!!

They can be stretched to a certain extent I think, but it would need to be tight atm rather than so small you cant get it on your head I think.

Not wishing to rain on your parade, but why on earth would you want one? My friend got her head kicked in when her horse went down out hunting, she ended up underneath him, her "custom made" Patey fell off, and he landed a hoof on the back of her head. She has not been the same since.

Another friend proudly showed me his £300 made to measure Patey, to which I said, wouldn't you rather have spent £40 on something which might actually protect your head?

A week later he was unconscious on the ground having fallen off and lost his Patey sometime during the descent.

As an aside, I was quite annoyed when the BBC Euro coverage showed the riders all working in in beaglers - some example to set for followers of our event riders

And you think that the top hats that they went on to ride the dressage in, offered more protection??

And what about the likes of Carl Hester, would you prefer to see him in tails a crash hat and a body protector while riding his GP horses??

Obviously i feel very sorry for your friends.. and i'd NEVER go hunting in one!!

But if i deciede to ride my event horse during the dressage in one, then surely that's up to me!!

Actually, yes, I do not think that wearing a top hat and tails makes your horse go any better or worse than if you are wearing a proper riding hat. And considering that many dressage riders are unwilling to ride their horses in prize givings because the horses "can't cope with the atmosphere", perhaps they should reconsider their headgear.

My friends (one a she, one a he) both thought they looked more elegant wearing a Patey. Now one of them has brain damage and the other has permanent nerve damage to his arms. Both preventable injuries according to the medics.

The worst falls I've had in my (long) riding career have been in "low risk" situations. Please don't think your head will be any more protected if you happen to fall off during your working in or your dressage test than if you were to fall off out hunting.

But as you say, it's your head, your choice, and it may never happen to you.

I thought they made them to fit you? Is this the one you won? If so, they most definately should have measured you first!

I'm 99.99999% sure they can be stretched a little. Good news if you can already get in on, probably won't need to go far.

I am so not getting into the beagler argument. All I will say is that any adult has the right to choose what they ride in....

They can only stretch them so far!!

What size is it? Ebay is ace for selling them. I sold one I was given that was too big and got about £250 for it - brilliant seeing as it was free!!!

There are lots of people with little heads who'd want one.

Rowreach, she was asking for advice! Im definitely sure that you'd be more likely to be hit by a car than you would to fall off AND hurt your head at *** level eventing dressage!

i don't know whether they can be stretched, but if it's navy and a bit too small for you, please could I be put on the list of those who would like second dibs?!
i've always wanted one...
and i'll only ride one i really trust in my beagler (which, btw, i know gives only a tiny bit more protection than the cardboard box it came in), ditto my top hat, but i reserve the right to do so...

I have a Patey and I would have to say that there is no way that it would actually fall off, although I agree that they don't offer the level of protection that a properly fitted crash hat would give.
MdS - the Patey can be fitted so you don't have to worry about a round or oval head if you get my meaning (Charles Owen fit me but Champion don't due to the shape) but I'm not sure that the actual size (circumference) can be altered much. It may be possible to alter a fraction.
Best thing is to take it along to Patey, or when they are at an event and see what they can do.

You can steam them bigger - hold over rapidly boiling water for a while then onto your head (teatowel on head to prevent scalding!!!!

). Repeat as necessary. However this only stretches them if they are tight rather than not-get-on-at-all-able.

I would join the queue if you couldn't make it fit as I too reserve the right to die doing dressage, however all my other stuff (coats etc.) is black so I shall stand back and watch the stampede go by on this occasion...

Some of you not getting the point..
Yes i know Patey are made to measure, and this one was made to measure, but not for my head!!!

It was made for a friend, who has never worn it..

I don't know what the size is.. but it's navy blue and very nice looking (i did look inside it, and there's no size in there, so there's no way of finding out)..

Re. a que forming behind me, should it not fit.. i'll have to find out what she wants to do with it, should nothing be do'able to make it fit me

My Patey is lovey - OH kindly bought it for me at Xmas - however DO NOT PUT IT OVER THE KETTLE - Patey were at great pains to explain why this is so bad.

If it can be squished on, then they should be able to strach it. Give them a ring, Trevor is v helpfull as is the man that does the shows - quite offten they will steam/stretch mine for free when it has got wet and shrunk a bit.

Cool.. well i've got to go see them at Aldon anyway (pick up my Blenheim prize then

)
so i can ask then!!
At this rate, i could end up with two free Pateys

They can be defo altered a bit - basically steam from a kettle. Their workshop is between Tetbury and Cirencester, if you can't get them to doalteration on site.
