Hi everyone. I am looking into getting a secod dog to my JRT bitch as a bit of company for her as I don't like to have just 'one' of anything. I am keen on Patterdale terriers but I dont know an awful lot about them apart from they are ratters etc. Any info on characteristics, temperament and training greatly appreciated. I would be looking to get a bitch puppy. Thanks R x

Id be keen to know too as I have had my heart set on one for a while now.

My farrier has one and she is wonderful but I do know that they are not "easy" dogs"

Stubborn as mules

Friend has one and he has a mind of his own.

My farrier has one too and it goes ratting on the yard when he comes to shoe the horses. It is a lovely looking little thing but it doesn't have much interest in humans I don't think. It is a typical terrier and single minded in its pursuit of prey!

I had a little Patterdale when I was a child. She lived till she was 17 years old. She was very very obedient, very loyal and incredibly loving and sensitive - she was my little "cuddle buddy" during teenage ups and downs. Absolutely fantastic little dog!

OH has had plenty of them. Lets remember they're working terriers, so they can be fiesty! Love people, very friendy, not so nippy as a JRT but they'll nip off down any hole given the chance. In the working terrier world they do have a reputation for being the 'hard' terriers, in other words feistier than others.

I know of a pair who were brought up in a family situation who are lovely little dogs, another one who was rehomed to a family after failing to make the grade as a worker and loves the kids and also is excellent at ratting! Like with any breed there are certain traits but at the end of the day its the way you bring them up.

A friend I stayed with had two. Both were incredibly loving, one a lot more timid than the other but she was also the hunter of the two. Let them go in the woods and that was that they lost all hearing! They were great dogs though and I think if you have plenty of time or space for exercise and some training they are great dogs.

Well, mine has been a delight and is now into her 16th year. Deaf as a post but still dashing about and has been no trouble at all. She has also followed behind my horses for many hundreds of miles .

Pick from good stock and train properly. Goes for any dog, really.

Our new Fell Pup (as far as I understand it) although classed as a seperate breed is a cross between a Patterdale and something else... not entirely sure - wasn't listening at that point! LOL!!

She is 9 weeks fiesty, stubborn and nicknamed WITCH.. however she is also a real cutie but once on a 'mission' forget no biting/scratching as she will bark and get very angry with you if you tell her NO!!

Give me a Ridgeback ANYDAY!! LOL!!

She is what is known as a typical Terrier!! *rollseye*

I had three. They are popular little things these days.

We bred our girl charlie after the the 12th person said if she had puppies could they have one. She is from good lines and we found a boy who was similar. The owner of dad who has been breeding them for years warned us strongly that by 18 months they have nothing but killing on the brain. With Charlie I can well believe it

, she killed several rabbits after tearing their cadges apart one afternoon, chickens and then one of our cats. We do not know what happened that morning as they actually got on very well her and the mog. The decision was quickly made after this to rehome her to a hunting life and she is excellent at her job and is very much loved. She was soft as butter with us and a very nice dog. She was however very clever and calculating and with other animals could not be trusted.

We kept one of the puppies and the others went to working homes. We kept Badger who was the stranger of the litter tbh. He turned out far bigger and lankier than the others and is the only rough coated one. But because of his mothers behavior and his dads owners comment the poor little soul is not trusted when he has shown us time and time again he could be and is showing no signs of the deviousness and cleverness Charlie had. In fact he is a very daft critter bless him LOL.

In reality it is horrid to have to tar him with the same brush as his mum when he is nothing like her. He is now 16 months old and we are strict simply because we cannot have that line of behavior again. He is the soppiest sweetest thing and I love him to bits.

Just to point out we got Charlie when she was a year old and alwys considered her too clever for her own good and a bit er broken.

The other one was red who sadly was a clone of mum and is now happily hunting foxes.

Gosh sorry turned into a bit of an essay oooooops

. Also sad to see it sound a bit negative. Please do not feel put off by reply as they are fantastic dogs but they are very very clever and focused.

The breed is famous for being very good working dogs (they can and will kill even a big badger) but ones that can be simply bought home at the end of the day and be the softest and entrustable with the whole family; Or in Badgers case just do the soft at home bit

.

Also sorry for terrible writing, am on new Linux laptop and the keyboard is all over the place and I can not find the punctuation yet lol.

Don't think I've ever seen one here in France...
Do you know of any breeders ? I like them, I think they're cute but living in the countryside where they can get plenty of exercise seems to be a priority from what I read.

I have a little smooth coated Patterdale. I got him from Battersea Dogs Home in April when he was roughly a year old. He adores people and likes nothing more than curling up on your lap and having a sleep. He is very good with children too, but isn't keen on them if they scream - but for some reason he really doesn't like loud noises, alarms etc... But then I have no history on him so who knows what has happened in the past.
Nothing seems to phase him at all and he is very intelligent and picks things up very easily.
His breed are well known for there excessive energy, he would run all day long if he could! Oh and when he latches onto a scent his hearing suddenly isn't so good!!
He is a fantastic little dog who is always happy and cheerful.
