I'm looking into getting a puppy and have fallen in love with patterdales, as my YO has one and she's just the coolest dog, but i've not actually been able to find out that much about them. I know they are primarily working dogs so need a lot of exercise which is fine. But have they generally got good temprements? Are they good pets? And i also wanted to know if there was a difference in personality between sexes? I know in a lot of breeds, dogs can be more easy going than bitches or whatever, are patterdales the same? Thanks

I know of quite a few of them, as working dogs yes but as pets no. To put it politly- horrid black rats!!!! I could go on for ever but I guess you can tell I don't like them! ps i have dogs I like dogs just not this breed.

They can be quite gobby and snappy, very excitable, very terrier like and then some. I do know an agressive one, he can be lovely but there are things you cannot do or he will bite, and he barks A LOT.
However, i have only met two, and cannot speak for the breed as a whole.

i have a 2 year old male patterdale. i love him 2 bits! hes the best dog i have ever had. hes got the nicest temperament, has never shown a nasty side at all! great with small children and loves the horses!! patterdales are very playful and always seem 2 be up to something! but great dog, im even buying another in the new year as they r so great to have around!

We have had a patterdale bitch for about 6 years. (She was one when we got her). She was bred at a hunt kennel as a working dog but for us she is just a pet really, although she has killed 'vermin'. (Trying to be pc here!) She is an absolute delight and we love her to death. She sits on our knees to be stroked like a cat. However she is a very good guard dog and the postman and other delivery men will not go near her. Before we had her, we had a patterdale dog who had the most character of any dog we have known. He was killed by a badger unfortunately.

Friends got one and tbh love them, great nature ,quick, gets on with other dogs never snappy, does tricks etc BUT hunting instinct is strong with it!She gets a scent and she's off, totally ignores recall as seems intent on tracking.

i work on a pheasant shoot and the terriers are predominantly patterdales, very good working dogs, they are friendly little things, but not cuddly lap dogs, and definitely trained to kill. we are looking for a border terrier and have considered patterdales instead, but i think they are too much of a working terrier to be a proper house dog imo

For pets I haven't heard good reports. My friends is now 2 and still a pain the ar*e, it chews everything (although probably the result of boredom). She had 2 and had to get rid of one due to fighting (sisters).

If you are really into your ratting and hunting, then great dogs especially if kept in a kennel. However for a house pet I'd consider something like a border than is a lot calmer and more likely to be sleeping than eating your stuff!

We have a super Patterdale, he is almost 7 and when we got him my daughter was only 5 and he has tolerated being wrapped up in blankets, being treated like a doll and every sort of abuse (in a kind way) that a little girl would want to inflict on a puppy! We were there when he was born and knew his mother and were never in any doubt that we wanted a Patterdale. He is a perfect little chap, was easy to housetrain and has never caused any damage or chewed anything. However, he can have his own little agenda when off the lead and is very selectively deaf despite going to training and agility classes - though this could be becaus ehe is still 'all man'! I'm sure I read that Patterdales are the couch potatoes of the terriers. Would definately have another and except for the wandering tendancies would highly recommend one!

OH is a hunt terrierman and we have about 7 Patterdales at the moment which he works. All have great temperaments and are very friendly. We had a litter last year which we didn't want to keep so rehomed them all. One of which went to our landlord and they adore her. She is a total family dog and so well behaved. She comes to stay here when they go away and she is brilliant. Even gets on with my dog who is a little madam.

Def. worth getting.

We have a wonderful part Patterdale which we got when at Lincoln Horse Trials two years ago.

Mother is Jack Russell x spaniel, and father is Jack Russell x Patterdale. What a wonderful cross! He is obedient, energetic, friendly and very slightly eccentric - also BOUNCES very high when excited. Only thing is in life he is aggressive about is the post! (Not the postMAN - just the letters that come through the door and landed on his head as a Puppy!)

Wouldn't be without him - he makes me laugh so much!

My friend has one, he is lovely (though could be due to good training!) and she says he has never in her memory snapped at a person or the horses. When the yard gate is open or the filly (not great with dogs) is on the yard, all you have to do is point to his 'spot' (on top of the rain barrel

) and he'll leap up and sit there til told otherwise! Perfect

My sister had a patterdale... he started off delightfull, but then started with the odd nip here and there... then he bit her neightbour, and pinned down their cat.

He then savaged my mums dog, and we had a hell of a job to detach him... My sister had a friend come round and he went to bite his throat. At this point she sadly took him to the vet to be PTS. The vet thought he was gorgeous (as he could be!) and sister brought him home again.

She then rehomed him on a farm, where they thought he was gorgeous, and sister warned them exactly what he was like... Well, one day at the farm he came home dragging a dead badger.... But the icing on the cake was when they came home one afternoon, and he had killed their cat in the kitchen, and was EATING IT!

Wouldnt be a breed i would recommend LOL! Apparently he has finaly found his niche in a hunt kennels. (his name was Stan, by the way).

My Patterdale is nearly 4 and just the best dog I've had. As a pet he's fabulous - really cuddly, sits on your knee, etc. Gets a tonne of exercise though, so I think that probably helps.

Brilliant with the horses, tolerates cats (indoors only!) and is a fantastic ratter.

Only thing I would say is recall skills are totally zero. He will sit, lie down and even roll over when you ask, just don't expect him to come back to you if he's got a scent.

Wouldn't change him for the world, though!
