As title basically.

I'm an old dinosaur and resolutely refuse to sign up to any contracts re. mobile phones, but need to replace my pre-historical (but much-loved) current mobile handset.

Recognise I might have to replace my SIM which will be a pain as its so old it might not be compatible with anything "modern".

So any ideas please? What do you peeps take out riding with you?

I need something small and snappy which will fit easily into joddies pockets and/or phone-pouch connecting to a waistband; plus will stand being fallen off onto!! :)

And er, um, purrrrlllleeeeassssee don't get technical on me folks!!! :)

Thanks.

I have my iphone but love the technology so probably not appropriate. Just go into your preferred vendor and have a look at the various phones. Best place to start though is something like looking at compare the market. Actually if you own your phone, have a look at the SIM only contracts because that can easily work out as much much cheaper than PAYG. So I bought my iPhone. I have a sim only contract with Vodafone and pay...£8 a month. Sometimes I go over and they will text me to tell me I have to pay x on my debit. I save money over when I was purely PAYG so worth looking at this.

Id look for a small Nokia, something like the C2-01, they are usually quite tough little phones, you usually have to buy them with a new sim but you should be able to take your old number across with you, you will need to contact your service provider to see how you would go about doing that.

I have a Nokia 100. Only paid £6 for it! Fantastic. It does everything I need (e.g. telephone and messages)!!! I love it. It is small and virtually unbreakable!

I have a doro pay as you go, cost about £20 top up when needed, open it dial speak close it only does calls and text perfect for hacking. Have a smartphone for all all else

I always have the tiny flip phone pay as you go - fits in my jods pocket or on my phone armband. Bought one recently in Carphone Warehouse, Vodaphone, Samsung, silver. Easy to use - no camera though. £8 I think with my own SIM.

PS I am also a dinosaur!!!!

i am also a little mature ,dont need lots of extras and only have a pay as you go phone as its for emergencies mainly.. ive got a motorola phone which folds up and slips into my breeches pocket very easily..... have had it for years and cant remember how much it was but wouldnt have been more than £30...its t mobile (which is now EE)

Look on ebay, I buy all my phones on there and usually sell them for the same when I'm fed up of them. Just check which network you're on if they're locked to one or not.
I've a Motorola flip phone here, no camera but easy to work and easy in your pocket if that's any good; (locked to O2)

Got to Adsa or Sainbury's or similar and have a look. You can get a cheap one for under £20 very easily. I got a tiny clamshell bu Alcatal (sp?!) for £1.19! It was old stock that'd been sitting in the warehouse for ages and forgotten about, so price dropped to clearance. Nice suprise when they rang it through the till, although it was only £13 anyways.

If you go to a phone shop they will have mostly only new posh phones that are very fragile. They are unlikely to have anything like the old solid ones.

I've got a little Samsung fold-up one that was dead cheap on PAYG - think it is on EE. No camera or any fancy stuff but it seems very resilient and is small enough to fit in jods pocket. And the battery lasts AGES!

I got a cheap nokia in Tesco about £20 and then do pay as you go vodaphone. £20 can last me about 3 months. I think texts are 28p I use it more as an alarm. Rarely ring anyone I have a work i phone but dont want to take that out with me in case I crack the screen and its big and bulky with gloves on you cant use the screen. SO just make sure you have good network coverage with your area provider ie orange etc. Vodaphone was good but a couple of years ago its not working as well and they told us a mast was down in our area but clearly they never fixed it up!

I am a techno phob so I like my Nokia a text is the same as an email on a phone. I still have to check my emails on laptop etc.
