Paying for haylage 'by the week' question

hi,

i am curious as to how other yards may do this....

so ..... for anyone who is at a livery yard and pays a set price per week for haylage, how does the YO operate this system? how do they ensure individuals dont take the ***s? do you have rules about quantities etc? and finally, how much do you pay per week for what size horse/pony?

We have 5 barns at our yard, 4 together and one seperate there is a bale put in the seperate one and a few for the other 4 to share.
People at our yard are pretty good, its £6 per week for a pony (14.2hh and under) and £8 per week for a horse. I think last year there were a few people who would fill up loads of nets and pile them in their tack room and the YO just had a quiet word with them.
 
It gets awfully messy to try and give quantities according to size of horse etc.
For that reason, no yards I've been at have gone that route, tried it yes, but found it a total pain.

Most yards I know of have "ad-lib" haylage, meaning for a set fee you can use as much or a little as you want.

It a question of balancing, some use more, some less, but all remain happy.

I personally would not stay at a yard that dictated how much haylage I could use, simply because it is indirectly dictating how I look after my horse.

Edited to say, in most cases haylage has been included in livery, but at one yard it was £5 per week regardless of whether you had a shetland or a 18hh heavy weight, obviously the big fella would eat a lot more - thats what I mean by balancing act x

bargin !!!

about 12 years ago i looked at a livery yard and it was £15 a week for hay or haylage.... regardless of size of horse/pony - they wouldnt reduce it for my shetland so i didnt move there - but if i would have jumped at the chance if it was only a fiver a week!!!
 
I was on a yard that did this.....IIRC it was £10 for a pony and £10/£15 for a horse depending on how good/bad do-er they were.

I cant understand why anyone would want to hide hay in their tackroom if they were paying weekly for it!? Surely that would be of no benefit at all!??

haha no way, use hay as a bed...........now that would be taking the pee!

Blooming hell, £15 per week is so expensive for hay/haylage.
Up my way, I pay 40 per week, thats for stable, straw bedding and ad-lib haylage with no restrictions at all, and you get 7 day a week turn out!!
Its the going rate though, and everything is grown on the farm.
If much more expensive, a yard would not survive.
I think its lot more expensive down south, but then the wages are better as well x
 
We payed £15 per week (used to be £10) weather it was an 11hh pony or a 17hh beast. We could use as much as we liked although if you did take the pee then you would get a hefty head chewing from the YO.
