Do you think im being silly?

Damaged back last year, finally had op in December and my tb horse hasnt been ridden since November despite offering free rides on her. She is traffic proof, goes out in company/alone.
I have another 3 weeks before the consultant said was the miniumum time i could get back on a horse and i dont fancy getting on a horse that could be fresh as i have to be very careful for 6 months and i dont want it jolting if she is acting silly. Only owned her for 9 months, if it was my other tb, i wouldnt be worried at all because i know she behaves no matter how long you leave her.

I have just emailed a local livery/riding school who backs horses etc to see if they would ride/school her for an hour once a week for the next 3 weeks just to get her back in the swing of things.

Im not expecting her to misbehave but i darent take the risk.

I put adverts everywhere to see if anyone wanted to ride her the past 3 months but no one interested at all.

Hi,

No I don't think you are being silly.

I brought a 4 year old last year who was a lot greener than I thought, so sent him away to be schooled professionaly, came back a lovely horse to ride, but because I work full time and it was late in the year, I had the girl who schooled him to come to the yard twice a week to keep him going as I am only able to ride at the weekends.

I feel alot more confident on him knowing that he is not fresh and is still being educated.

Well worth the money for piece of mind;)

Very sensible idea.

Perhaps, the first couple of times you ride, ride something slower and steadier if you think that you may have problems.

Good luck. Hope that it all works out. Sure it will!

sensible idea. but an hour once a week is neither here nor there. you would be better to wait and then send her somewhere to be ridden every day for a fortnight before you get back on. good luck

I think you're making the right choice. I'm in a similar situation, i broke my arm so my yo is riding my lad 3 times a week. I had considered just turning him away for a few months but i'm happier now he is kept is use.

At the same time, my arm is gonna take a while to get back to full use, so im going to get some lessons on her schoolies till im confident i have my seat and balance back.. i'l wont have ridden by four months then, so i think its better to start slow and easy, not on my green tb!

I'm just about to start looking for someone I can pay to ride my pony too - so I don't think you are being silly.

My issue is that I don't want a loaner, but my pony just needs more work. I'm limited on time with my other horse on box rest recovering from a fractured leg and me working full time. I reckon paying someone is much more sensible!

just make sure your freelance jockey is insured, because as you will be paying and the jockey doing this for financial gain, your normal horse insurance policy will NOT cover any incidents. neither will a rider policy or a BD/BE/BS policy. it needs to be a commercial freelance policy with 3rd party liability and 3 c liability.(care, custody and control)
