Paying instructor if you cant attend lesson

If you have booked a lesson but cant attend because horse is lame for example, would you still offer a payment or does your instructor charge a cancellation fee.

I know they charge in riding schools if you cancel without 12 hours notice but wonder if freelance instructors do?

I always offer my trainer now if something happens with 24hrs - sometimes its been a week in advance that I have cancelled then no I haven't paid/offered as enough time to fill the space if wanted.

I would expect to have to pay if i gave less than 24hours notice.

I don't normally charge (and have not yet!)but reserve the right too if it's less than 24 hours to a lesson.

I mostly teach at the yard I keep my own horse at so last minute cancellations aren't a big problem. But it is a pain if I travel and have a few lined up but the middle one cancels!

Yes, I would expect to pay half if I cancelled my lesson less than 24 hours beforehand but not if it was any longer.

If more than 12 hours notice then I wouldnt charge, also if it doesnt inconvience me then certainly wouldnt charge anything. If I had already used the petrol to get there or have someone after then I would expect half payment

OH doesnt charge is lessons are cancelled, but really does appreciate some notice, as he maybe able to fit someone else in or work one of ours instead.

Wasnt happy a few weeks ago when he had travelled to a yard quite a distance away to be told that his client wouldnt be riding as it was raining, and they didnt even offer to pay just said see you next week! (BTW It wasnt raining that hard and the school wasnt flooded)

I would always offer if it was less than 24 hours notice. It was my instructor that first noticed my mare wasn't quite right last year, we were about 10 minutes into my lesson, and called it a day. I offered to pay but she said no. I've never actually cancelled a lesson though, once they are booked I always go through with them.

I haven't read other replies but I had this with my horse going lame all the time and I paid my instructor cos its not her fault the horse was lame. She had driven to me and booked out her time so it was only fair imo that she didn't lose out financially.

I always offer but RI never accepts as it goes both ways. She doesn't particulary like teaching in the rain and has been known to reschedule at the last minute so by the same token she is fine if I need to cancel due to lameness.

I always offer if it's less than 24hrs, but my RI only accepted the one time I actually completely forgot I had the lesson. She's never accepted if it's been last minute because of lameness or a lost shoe. I think it does help that it's usually me and my sister so she does come out to at least 1 lesson when my girl does something.
