How much payload do I need in a vehicle to be comfortable?
Old 505 horse box
My horses are never bigger than 16.2
Mostly tbs
Heaviest horse is have is 600/650kg probably 16hh ISH
Tb is 16.2hh probably like 550kg
I usually only take the one horse in the box but obviously may take both the odd day so what Gross Payload do I need?

For your car you mean? Your looking at very roughly 1100kgs, but google it to be sure, for a 505. Then around 1200kgs for the horses, so 2300kgs, but that's cutting it close, so ideally a minimum of 2500kgs, I'd go higher if towing two is something you plan to do regularly and also because Ireland isn't that flat and hills can take it out of your car when towing a heavy load.

Thank you!!
Would you happen to know which of these I need to be looking at?
Gross payload seems tiny for the type of jeep this is

Surely what you want is maximum towable capacity (braked)? That doesn't seem to be there. Or is that the same as "individual trailer towing mass"? (a phrase I'm not familiar with)

I'm fairly sure that gross payload is what you can safely put IN a car, not tow with it.

You need to know the max braked towing weight for that vehicle. As Widgeon says, maybe that’s what listed as the individual trailer towing mass @3450kg, though I’ve never seen it called that before. If the max braked towing weight is 3450kg then it’s easily up to towing an Ifor 505 with two up.

All unbraked trailers are limited to a max total weight of 750kg regardless of the towing vehicle, they are small cargo type trailers not suitable for carrying ponies, let alone horses.

These are the details for an Ifor 505.

The trailer payload is the max gross weight of the trailer (2340kg) minus the unladen weight (905kg), which is 1435kg.

Thanks guys
I somehow missed the notification that I got a response here
So 905kg plus the horses
So around 2100kg for both
Or 1550 ish for one

What is it you are trying to establish? Payload is the difference between the MAM/GVW and the unladen weight.

Or are you trying to work out what towing capacity you need on a car in order to tow the trailer with two horses onboard?

I am trying to buy a vehicle to tow with and was finding it very hard to understand what any of the stuff meant online
I’d be happy just getting a car to tow one horse to take to day events as my dads jeep there to borrow to take horses to new fields and such
I only take one horse when I’m going jumping or a day out as I can only ride one but feel horrible stealing my dads jeep for a whole day
So I think with my budget buying an suv type to just tow one horse to my day events will do nicely
