Having recently had both 16hh / 16.1 neddies on a weighbridge and discovering that each weighs just over 600k, I'm wondering whether any of those ads for "3.5t trucks carries 2 large horses" is actually true. I'm planning to buy a decent new-ish one next year but need to know whether they really do carry that sort of weight (plus 2 people & stuff).
Any experiences anyone?

It will tell you on the Plate/MOT cert what you can carry

My 7.5 tonnes lorry has a loading weight of 1.8 tonnes to play with - which considering it's a four horse lorry is a bit interesting....!

I drive a 3.5 tonne 2 horsebox (for a living) 07 so newish (won't say on here what make) and i know for a fact, with one horse and 2 people on board i am over weight. You really need to be very careful. Me personally, i would never have a 3.5 tonne because of the lack of weight.

Very few, the posh expensive coachbuilds and you might just scrape 1400kg payload.

I had a VWLT35 and that only had 800kg payload

Highest payload for most is 1,200 kg
Some are far less.
So, IN THEORY, you could just about put two large but not heavy 600 kg horses ontheir, with not hay, water, passenger, kit etc. and an almopst empty fuel tank.

Mine is a 3.5 Marlborough Cob, and i regularly put on both 16.1hh horses (warmblood type) i am quite sure that i am up to or over the payload but i was assured by Marlborough that it would be ok when i bought it two years ago, but i have noticed they have changed their website now to say it takes up to 1150??

But then again, they also said they would be a plug, table, radio cassette player with steering wheel finger tip controls. coat hooks and lockable glove compartment and a warranty.

Sorry changed post to a bit of a rant, don't think the 3.5 tonne are all they seem.

The 3.5 tons vans that have cupboards, sinks, cookers etc added have a very poor pay load. People forget that you have to include everything you are carrying when totting up the weight. This includes diesal, people, hay, horse, water etc. The simple ones without added cupboards are a better buy.

Hmmm then see my post from this morning about towing seems like a tow vehicle has a better 'payload' than a 3.5t lorry, or am I missing something here??

Mine can take a 16.2hh and me and all my tack, water, etc and weighs 3150kg, and weights 2300kg unladen. Dont underestimate the weight of all the equipment you carry!!! My horse wieghs about 560kg

I have a 7.5t with basic living and woud only carry 2 x 16.1's in it. With tack, water, etc, etc, I'd be very close to the max payload (would def. not get 3 in - which is what it's supposed to carry

) so wouldn't have thought you'd get 2 + stuff in a 3.5t.

my 3.5 ton weighs 2300kg unladen, but its just used for the one horse, and 2 people, and all the equipment, you do have to be very careful, when I was looking I emailed someone about there 3.5ton they had for sale, and it weighed 3 ton with nothing in.......

Hi Anj,

3.5T vehicles will give different payloads depending on the coach-builder. An average payload would be approx. 1.2T.
If both your horses weigh 600kgs then a 3.5T may not be for you.
Have you thought about a 4T/5.5T/6.5T?
They are about the size of 3.5T but have a bigger payload than the 7.5T. For example, I have just sold a 6.5T with a 3T payload. The 5.5T will give over 2T payload.
