Can anyone out there give me some advise?? My 8 yr old cob mare has fractured her pedal bone and it seems it is in the worst place as it has gone into her coffin joint..I am gutted as it seems she may never be sound again.
She is on box rest and has a bar shoe with side clips..it is early days as it only happened 3 wks ago.:(

Has anyone had experience with this themselves?

I currently have a horse with a broken long pastern which split right up the middle of the bone so it was basically in two pieces. Hes had four pins put through the actual joint as it fully broke, one thing which i found works really well and speeds up recovery is Comfrey leaves.

If you go to a local health food shop and get some, just soak 20g in boiling water over night and let it stew, then just add it to there feed. Its really good stuff and it seems to really help my pony. Hes also been put on Cortaflex which seems to be helping.

Mine was a really slow process to start with and he spent 10 weeks between my vets and Leahurst and everyone kept saying that he wasn't recovering how they'd like, but now they are really pleased with him. Don't give up on them ever being sound again, Cody has his good days and his bad days but slowly his bad days get less frequent. I know it seems like it'll never end in the first few weeks and its really hard but honestly as the weeks go on and you watch them improve its so worth it. It took 13 weeks and mines finally allowed out of his box for up to 10 minutes a day.

We had a horse at work who fractured a hind pedal bone last year, unfortunately in this case the outcome was not good. She had 3 months box rest with a ' cast' and bar shoe but the fracture was so fragmented that the chance of soundness was not good. She was only young. After 3 months she could still not weight bear enough to continue treatment and was pts.

I think that in all honesty the chance of returning to full soundness is guarded in most cases but I'm sure your vet is keeping you well informed.
