Hi All,

X-Rays on Friday confirmed that my horse has fractured his pedal bone. The vet has recommended 3 months box rest and remedial shoeing. With X-Rays in 6 weeks and then another 6 weeks after that. At the end of the 3 months she said we can look to introduce some walking in hand and possibly turnout in a small pen.

I just wondered what others who have been through the same thing experience is with this type of fracture? Has anyone returned to eventing/SJ and if so how long did it take? What sort of routine did you use to bring your horse/ponies back into work?

Thanks!

I've had 2 with this.

The first was 35yrs ago, so she was just turned out for best part of a year. Re xrayed after that and it had healed so I just started working her again.

Second was an older horse who spilt her hind pedal bone in 2. We decided that box rest was not the way she wanted to go (she was at least 28yrs), so I just treated her as normal. She hopped on 3 legs for a while at anything faster than walk, and after about 6 months was sound. She lived til she was 31, so not much coming over her.

I have known two treated the way your vet is suggesting. One returned to point to point racing, the other did dressage.

my friends horse fractured hers twice the first time she was box rested and went sound, second time she just turned her out as the horse was dangerous on box rest, and after some months she did return back to normal work.
