Hi everyone. Having a down day today researching what I can about pedal osteitis. My horse is 15 and has quite bad osteitis caused probably by two keratoma operations six years ago (keratoma re-grew and so 2nd op removed quite a lot of bone and tissue to ensure it was gone). Now he has a suspected hairline fracture in his pedal bone 99.9% caused by osteitis. X-ray shows very demineralised bone and MRI shows suspected fracture and confirms osteitis.
Consider myself extremely lucky to have had six sound years, with bar shoes.
So he's been on box rest since before Xmas, just starting to be turned out in small grass pen now, probably because i pleaded with vet, but is still lame in trot, though much better than December. Vet has put him back on 1 bute and he's been having bars with side clips and equi-pak. He's been a bit silly in pen at times but is generally quiet.
It would be great to hear if anyone has similar experiences to share. Good, bad or ugly, just need to feel like I'm doing everything i can. Should i try magnetic bell boots? Am I being too hasty pushing for turn out?
Thank you!
