Hi, I need some help, my horse has been diagnosed of having Pedal Osteitis and chronic concussion. He is having gel pads and bar shoes in his front feet. I have been told i won't be able to do to much with him but i'm not giving up. I'm giving him rest at the moment. Does anyone know of any supplements that will help? Share your help and information with me, everything will be much appreciated, thank you!

I'm afraid I can give you nothing positive. When my mare was diagnosed with this a rest period didn't work for her. You have my sympathies though, and I hope you manage to find a solution :(

I had a friend as a child who's mare had it. From memory she had special shoes and always had to wear overreach boots. Apart from that she got on fine, we still tore round the countryside together jumping everything in sight :o in retrospect that was probably not the best management routine, but she wasn't lame much at all. She used to BJSA before her diagnosis with her previous owner and we were generally jumping much smaller than she used to, but she still had a good quality of life. Last I knew she was still going strong in her late teens. Obviously not the same for all, but some can go on to live happy useful lives :) (no one shout at me, I know now that the childhood approach was not sensible)

I'm trying everything for him but thanks! Oh ok, yes he wears over reach boots 24/7! Do you know of any supplements I can give him for repair?

Have you tried barefoot? If this is new to you then I suggest you read as much as you can how the structure of the hoof is built and without shoes how a well balance trimmed hoof can help to spread the load over the whole hoof ie frogs heels walls and just inside the hoof walls. I have had my fair share of ailments and have found that less is best. Try it! Metal shoes will only add to concussive forces in the long run. Hoof boots during transition and after even help you to keep riding, you can get gel pads to go inside them too.

Good luck
