before last winter, I can only remember the odd couple of weeks when I couldnt ride due to the weather! 3 winters ago I was regularly hacking out in Jan/Feb and going to fortnightly lessons at an indoor with my RC. Then the ice-age hit:rolleyes: The snow came in November.... and even now when the snow has gone, everything is still so icy its lethal:( I fell trying to shuffle across a carpark on Sunday and we cant get out of our driveway without 4 wheel drive, its inches thick sheet ice. The fields arent looking much better. I thought light was at the end of the tunnel as I entered a dressage comp with my RC this weekend, the forecast was for it to be milder so thought we might actually get the trailer out, but the yard it is at is sheet ice and they have had to cancel due to H&S:(

So thats 2 winters now in a row where I might as well have turned my horse away from November to March:eek: If this is how winters are going to be now up here Im not sure I want to keep playing:o:(

yes! So bored with it now. It's such a slog. The snow hasn't shifted, there is inches of ice on top and all I seem to do is carry things constantly, keep a pathway passable between field and stables, and it has been 6 weeks now....
We roughed them off in November, thankfully, but they come in every evening.
There is no way I would attempt transporting them to an arena - I'd have to negotiate a mile of very dodgy road first and I'd hate to try to get them down a ramp here. I had the foresight to keep a pile of grit in the parking area - It's buried and frozen solid, so completely unusable.

Yes I've been the same. I didn't ride from the week before Christmas until April last year and this year I haven't ridden since late November. It's not the snow so much, but the ice. Unfortunately the track to my yard is just impossible, then the road up to the woods and the woods themselves are the same. It's pretty high up (same as where I live) so holds the snow. I don't have an arena. I took his shoes off last year and I only just had him shod before it snowed in November. I'm still debating re-shoeing next week or taking them off. To be honest, with work I can only ride at weekends anyway (as dark before and after with no lights) so it doesn't really bother me. He lives out and in winter is in a 7 acre field on a steep hill so stays surprisingly fit.

Yes we have only just got our vet and farrier down to the yard as they couldn't get cars etc on yard. Our horses are fed up to, they look miserable in cold now fed up with mud - our fields are the worse they have ever been but are actually holding up well considering

Are you a member of Stonehaven Riding Club to? Looks like the Xmas show may end up being held in March/April if this continues lol

yes I am! Just had them on the phone confirming i knew it was cancelled. am so fed up with it all now:(

After loosing my mare in November (b4 snow hit) I can honestly say I'vve been glad not to have a horse to do this winter!!

But, am loonking for new horse at the moment & noones selling anything decent at the moment so look like being horseless in to Spring :(

this is the same for me such a pain! i have been out on a hack about 4 times since end of november and all RC training has been cancelled, i dont have a school so there is not much i can do at the moment! really annoying as he was going so well before winter struck! dreading getting him fit again as he is a pretty stubborn arab x with his own ideas :D

We finally got rid of the snow and ice this week and I was looking forward to getting out for a hack tomorrow - however the forecast is for a large atlantic depression to come in overnight with gale force winds and torrential rain! And I believe the below zero temperatures are due to return again next week, so it's by no means over yet :(

We have lots of rain at the moment and the temperatures are rising above freezing now - have a hack planned for tomorrow and its only the second time I have ridden in almost 7 weeks :( It better not freeze this evening or I will be absolutely furious and will have to come here to rant lol

We are identical to this, so pleased the ice has finally thawed and then totally depressed by the prediction of gale force winds.

I'm near Dundee, are you over this way as well?

It was about 6 weeks we couldn't ride at our yard :(

The snow has gone and the ice is just about gone but am close to the coast which does help, everywhere is covered in mud. However I still wouldn't hack as where the sun doesn't shine the paths are still sheets of ice. Thankfully we have a very good outdoor arena so threw my mare on the lunge this evening. I seem to be able to do something with her for 3 days and then the weather closes in.

Your post title made me smile...my Mum was from Edinburgh and haven't seen or heard that word for ages - she used it frequently!

I suppose at least it is giving me time to plan my summer etc.

Rosie has a foal at foot so couldn't do much but wanted to do wanted to do work with foalie and start working madam grrrrrrr

Think next year I will stock up on ice thick rugs, ice grips, rock salt studs etcetcetc
