Sorry to keep banging on about bits again but found something interesting on the web called a peewee bit, does anyone know anything about them and would it maybe be worth a try with my rein snatching problem ?

My Dad uses one for hunting his BIG (19.2) horse, as he tends to lean on the bit, makes my dads arms ache like you wont believe!!

With the peewee he cant lean on the bit, you can also use it in three different ways so are different strengths!

Dad loves it!

Have used it on 3 different horses, including my welsh sec. a who hadn't been ridden for 6 months + and normally goes in a hackamore as he's not fond of bits, but didn't seem to mind it at all! :) Never had a problem with it, seems really versatile.

Basically, try it! I'm sure there's somewhere you can hire them from??

I loathe them with a passion.

Had seen them being used and didn't think much of them...had to ride a couple of liveries in it myself and confirmed my thoughts on it, hated it!

Just me though.

I've just put one of my horses in one for jumping. It is amazing, i have a different horse! I have tried hundereds of bits on him, but this is the first one that actually works. If you put a really strong bit in his mouth he will rear and throw himself on the floor (he has a delicate mind!), but in a milder bit I had no control whatsoever. Now I can change pace and steer (even on a xc course!), and my horse is really happy in it. It does look a bit odd in the horses mouth, but IMO it is a pretty amazing piece of kit!

ETA I'm getting some pics through in a few days of my horse jumping SJ and XC in his peewee, I can post them if you want to see them!

Yes i would love to see your pics please. have found a website that i can loan one for a few quid to see how we go , am at my wits end with this rein snatching business, starting to wish i'd never layed eye's on her !

I've seen a second hand one for sale on a local directory, apparently suitable for a 5.5" mouth (sadly mine needs a 6" or I'd have had it! :p ) PM me if you want the details x

I like the PeeWee for horses with fleshy mouths and thick tongues. I almost suggested one on the other thread but thought that a more general answer would be better. I originally bought one for a Clydesdale who shot off with me (at a trot, so couldn't say bolting) when she took fright at some ponies cantering alongside us over a wall. I only stopped her after she had crossed the road by running her into a wall. The PeeWee gave us both brakes and steering. My IDx also responds well to it. I lent one to a friend who was having trouble with her eventer's brakes and steering. She says it made a great difference and he now understands what she expects, so she can now use a dressage legal bit. IMO it is a mild bit but effective because the horse has room for it in its mouth. The side pieces help with steering but only come into play if the horse needs a reminder to turn. The only problem is that the 'curb' strap is not long enough for either of my two, so I use a cat collar instead. The horses all seem to like the sweet-iron.
ETA, there are only 2 sizes, small for under 5.5" and large for over 5.5",

Ok interesting replies, she's not strong but seems to resent any bit, will get some prof help aswell . she takes a 5" bit normally .
