After reading through all the replies, I go along with whatever works for you and your beast, (as long as it's safe) if it was me I would try hacksawing off the curb ring if it's not going to be used, obviously carefully filing/grindstoneing off any sharp burrs/edges, then buy a second Pelham for if you ever want the two rings.
