Have just come back from stewarding at local RC. Girl on very nice pony - obviously strong - was riding with a single rein on the bottom ring of a pelham. It looked very harsh and was tempted to say something especially when she kept jabbing it in the mouth!

Any opinions on this?

No different to using an American / Continental gag on bottom ring with a crub strap. However the latter are more visually acceptable than a one reined pelham.

I use to hack mine about in a weymouth, which has much the same effect. Fine if you want brakes but aren't keeping a traditional contact (western riding etc)

I could be seen that the difference is that there would be much more force on the curb chain, which in the wrong hands can break the jaw, a continental gag has no curb chain, abailt a crub strap as mentioned above, however this is not the same severity as a curb chain, the action of leverage would be similar, personally I only recommend them to be used with two reins, if this is too much for a child then a kimblewick would probably be a less severe bit.
best regards
