I am trying out a rugby pelham on my boy this sat as a stop gap befor eI can get home and properly try bits, I've ridden him in it once and he was possibly slightly more under control.
Now, I rode with the curb chain so loose it wasn't coming into action. Can I take the curb off?
And what nosebands can I use the whole thing with, as I normally ride xc in a grackle and would prefer to do this again if poss...

yes it is possible to take the curb chain off but you need to take the hooks off as well. Why dont you try with a curb chain that does come into action?

Ive never used a pelham with anything other then a caveson noseband and i dont think i would use it with a flash or grackle or drop as it would interfere with the curb chain.

I ride my mare in a pelham with a flash noseband for XC. I was told this was OK, I still use the curb but not tight only because i do not want to take the hooks off.

Does a pelham work if there is no curbchain ie will it only have the action of say a hanging cheek snaffle.

I rode Ben in a pelham, and sometimes used a flash as well. The curbchain sat above the flash strap so I think it would be OK to use a flash or grakle.

I will bring the waterford for you and you can take it home and try it.

See you Sat

Pelham and grakle is fine - that's what I use. You'd have to have the grakle fitted pretty badly for it to interfere with the curb chain: (excuse the fact the strap is flailing in the wind!)

Thanks guys!
Fiona-not sure, I'm just really hesitant to put it on in case he doesn;t like it when my first xc ride in it will be on sat!
Thank you, would be very grateful as would really like to try it. I can always spot you by looking for poppy

Flash, Grakle and a Drop should all sit below where curb chain lies. I use a Grakle with a pelham no problem and the grackle comes nowhere near the curb

You can put a lip strap on the curb chain to hold it in place. (One of those things we should all do anyway, according to Pony Club.

Another option for the curb is a leather curb strap or one of those rubber covers for the chain. (I've wrapped them with latex/vetrap but sometimes Stewards are picky about that because they can't see what's underneath.) This works really well for horses that go well in the bit but tend to be sensitive and can be a good "middle ground" for a horse that needs a little more leverage but doesn't need the sort of "bite" a chain produces. (It's also less irritating if it's loose as it doesn't bang around as much.)
