hi!

iv just bough my Tb a Mullan mount pelham (he has a big tounge)

anyway.....

i was told by a very knowlegable and good friend it maybe worth having him in one of these for hacking

hes an exrace horse who is very green (especially hacking in large groups) wich doesnt happen often but does.

so my question is ill only use this bit out on hack as he jumps and schools nicley in a normal snaffle (peanut roller) if i use it with double reins rather than rounding and tie a knot in the 2nd set of reins on the curb and use the snaffle rein as i would if i was schooling and then if he starts bloting try bringing him back on the snaffle and is i fail a quick half halt on the curb rein....will this work?

hes not overly stong but i went out on a hack at the weekend with 5 other riders (he knows all the horses well) and hes fine if we canter at the front but hes a slow canter, so other tend to overtake but wont if i ask not to but its not nice to hold my freinds back all the time! but anyways if he gets overtaken he takes off untill hes infront again in which case once hes in front i can pull up....but id rather not have him bolting just because he wants to be infront!!!

i do understand that this is down to his background... but iv work really hard on the schooling and he can happly canter out in a big feild and on hack behind 1 other horse and more and the bolting starts to happen!

:) will it help :)

thanks x

If he bolts it make damn all difference what you've got in his mouth. However if he's just expecting to go for a good gallop and be intended to be in the lead then yes, if you use just the snaffle rein and pick up the curb if he's getting strong that may well work. Beware of giving it a good old yank like a handbrake though:(

I'd also be tempted to stick a neckstrap on him and school him that a pull on that means change down a gear.

You could also teach him that there is more than one speed of canter, then you won't hold your friends up.

Well fortunately he's not really bolting, he just likes to be in front, because he's an ex-racer.

However, I think you'd do better to learn to use the 2 reins properly (it's easy with a bit of practice), so that you can apply the 'slow down' aids smoothly, immediately he starts to quicken. I have to use 2 reins when out hacking, although my mare is fine schooling in a snaffle. She responds very well to the slightest 'tweak' on the curb rein, so it doesn't get to running away. she's not an ex-racer, just very strong but I'm sure the principle's the same.

What are the aids you are giving when you ask him to slow down as he's passing these other horses?

I'd also be working on faster canters in the school so that you learn how to control his canter at a faster pace and he learns that he can be controlled at a faster pace.

hi thanks for the replys xx

i practice in the areas fast cantering and even galloping and he reposnds well to giving him the reins and taking them bak slowly he coes down straight away. so this is not an issue...

i agree its not really bolting but it could be dangerous!!! i dont mind the speed when im incontrol lol

the aids i used when out hacking are the same when schooling (which he comes down from brilliantly) but out on a hack when passing other he doesnt listen at all...

i can use double reins just prefer not to lol.... i wouldnt just yank the curb i would pick it up the moment i knew he was going to get a bit head strong and slowly apply the pressur....

hoping this will wor???

he can gallop on the beach on feilds and come down from a gallop off woah so brakes are not a serious problem..... just when others are around lol xxx
