On Monday my beautiful mare was diagnosed with Pemphigus foliaceus. Having looked the condition up online it looks like the prognosis is pretty grim. As a prone laminitic having her on the high does steroids - which are required to keep the condition in check - is of course a huge risk and potential time bomb of chemical laminitis. If anyone has any knowledge on treatments and management of this condition i would be extremely grateful - it could be the difference that we need to keep her going. I am particually interested to hear from anyone who has managed the condition with minimal use of steroids and have taken a more holistic approach.
Thanks

Did you get my pm back?

I forgot to say that we used steroids for eight weeks. We only use them if it is life threatening. Ie my girly couldn't walk or eat due to oedema on her chest.

Global herbs Skratch has really helped us, as did a course of restore. Lots of thistles and nettles to eat and aloe Vera gel on the skin.

Pm doesn't appear to have come through though I am doing this from my phone as on a night shift so no computer access. Will have a look when I get in! Glad that you have got it under control though.

I've sent you two - where are you? Pm that probably! Also to find you on Facebook or Phoenix horse forum as there is a pemphigus sub group set up on there :) not much posting on there as fairly new and I've not had time!

I remember a horse called Topper at the Mare and Foal Sanctuary in Devon had this condition.
They might be able to offer help and advice. They used to have a forum; not sure they still have that, but I'm sure they would help if you contacted them.
