I joined in with the Penny Sangster clinic on my 4 yr old last night, as it was the first time I’ve done anything like that with him I thought I’d do a little report

Bit of background, Sparky is an opinionated little oink, who knows nothing but thinks he can take over the world, likes to buck and squeak and generally argue

. Last two weeks he has been taken right back to basics, as although he done some bits and bobs last year, it was all wrong and too fast so we thought he could learn it properly this time.

As he’s been such an oink for the last week I really thought I would only stay in there for 5 mins warm up before I called it a night - as it was he was going really well! There were 6 of us in the group, and he can get quite anxious working with others (just really green). Penny reckoned the trick to him will be really pushing him on so that he can’t get so up in the air. He was jumping really well, a little rushy through combinations to start with but soon relaxed and a couple of times he really did jump underneath me and it felt great! He was still bucking after every grid but only bronco type ones (don’t mind those, LOL). He worked at least twice as hard as everyone else as Penny wouldn’t let him rest for one minute until he ‘gave in’, which he did do eventually!

He started to get a bit grouchy and tired near the end of the lesson and on approaching the grid he was really behind my leg going into the first X pole, Penny shouted ‘push him forwards’ – so I kicked him on and he orbited me into space
shocked.gif
!!!! Little sod. His little tiny ‘clamber over’ the x pole jump suddenly turned into this huge kick back and hunch, by that time we were committed to the next fence, a spread of x poles (I was already slightly unseated by this point) which he just launched over, top of the wings then buried his head on landing and ran right through the next jump and I landed on the wing somewhere! Luckily unhurt, just because I put my leg on and he’d had enough

. So got back on, Penny said she was impressed I stayed on as long as I did,

! Then everyone else waited whilst he went over and over the grid by himself and the fences were going higher– all foot perfect !! Finished off after he did all three parts at about 2’9 and calmly and using his back etc.

I’m so gutted he did that as apart from that I was over the moon with him. I think it was just getting a bit too busy for him in there with 6 of us and it all got a little too much, LOL. He never even thought of stopping though, which I was pleased with, as this is something he used to do.

So there you go, our first ever jumping clinic was pretty much, bar one mishap (!!) a success. Very proud of my bucking boyo. Really liked Penny’s way of teaching and shall be joining in every Monday now - highly recommend her

Thanks for reading

Thanks TGM, I am fine amazingly, a long bath stopped the aches thank goodness.

They say the difficult ones often turn out to be the best, I think he is going ot be one of those horses that tests me out every step of the way. When he does come right he is amazing and very genuine. I don't feel like he lets me know him 100%, he always keeps a little bit to surprise me with!

Not sure if that's a good thing or not.....

Hehe......I caught the beginning of your session, but missed the going into orbit part
shocked.gif
He looked like he was going great for the bit i saw...really bouncing over the canter poles, and thoroughly enjoying himself
grin.gif
Hope the bruises aren't too painful today though

Bo and I went in the next session and had a great time...eventually ! Penny has nicknamed him 'the grumpy old man' as he goes round with this 'i can't be ar$ed' look on his face until the fences get up a bit
tongue.gif
Anyway, we ended up jumping some grids with fairly big oxers in them....bounce, bounce, bounce then one stride to an oxer that was 2 holes off the top of the wings on the left rein
shocked.gif
Then on the other we had a 3 fence grid of upright, one stride, oxer, one stride, bigger oxer. That ended up with the middle oxer at around 1.10m and the final part around 1.25m with an a-frame built into it. It certainly banished any fears we had left over about big back rails following our fall last summer

Bo had a ball and was really flying by the end of the session !

This is about week 6 of our lessons with Penny now, and the difference in performance in us is huge already ! Anyone who is in the area and gets the chance to be taught by Penny, i would seriously recommend that you do

), she was brilliant and I'd love to have some lessons with her again now, especially as the horse I have the ride on actually came from her as well!

So does she do regular clinics then? If so, where are they?

Hi Caz,

Penny does 3 groups at our yard in East Sussex every Monday night. they are packed full now but I'm sure she does others.

If you like I can PM you her number, I'm sure she'd like to hear from you

Hi Emily,

We're based in Battle. The clinics/lessons aren't run directly by Penny, but by our YO. However, i believe there will be some 'open' sessions on sunday 1st April that you might be interested in
