I'm not built on a small frame - I wear size 8-9 shoes depending on brand (Clarks 8s!) - the widest part of my calf is 17" and my boot length is (I think) 20" (though I read somewhere to add half an inch to allow for sag!)

Where on earth do I find boots? When I was younger I had no problem width-wise but height was always an issue. Now they're both an issue ;)

I tried on just about everything in Robinsons and eventually had to buy the only thing that would go round my leg - Shires (I think) chaps - and they're still a good 6" short on me. All the wide leg things seem to be designed for... people of shorter leg :(

Can anyone suggest anything? I can't afford much really, certainly no more than £150 - so if it's not possible, so be it. But I'd still like to know what's available - surely there's something, I'm not that abnormal am I?!

*stomps off on her mammoth legs to sulk in a corner*

Hahaha fellow mammoth here! I am also an 8 with 17" width, can't remember height but I am tall. I tried on some toggi Calgary and they were the first to fit comfortably on the calf. They were 84 pounds so not bad but they are not really smart enough for comps and I would like to make my money stretch to some that do everything. They are straight at the top too and think a curved top would make them at least look less short! Ariat bromonts would be ideal but alas there I was willing to buy them and they're not wide enough *sob*!

I notice treadstep do a lot of size variations and have lost out on a few on eBay but not really seen them elsewhere.

Hooray! Someone else :D Although you have my sympathies lol

My Shires chaps are the curved top style and the curve doesn't even reach my knee! But by that point I was just "They fasten, I'll have them!" :D

Just looked up the Toggi Calgary and it's a beautiful boot - not unlike some 'normal' boots I own, just because they're pretty :) But I see what you mean about smartness. Still lusting after them though...

I'll take a look at Treadstep. I'd also like something I can use for posh - I've got enough fabric chaps and long socks for everyday, but it's for shows and hunting I really want 'proper' boots (though they will slip into everyday use) ;)

Just had a google for tredstep and could only find the expensive ones! I think the ones I have seen are from the 'fuller fillies' range. I must say I slightly resent this title as my calves are pretty in proportion!

Yes the Calgary are nice and have seen them as low as 65 pounds, I think I am going to buy them anyway as they are kind of a cross between a yard boot and riding boot and are hard wearing. Realistically do I want to buy shiny riding boots and be ankle deep in mud?
I think you could get away with them for a lot of less formal shows, but its that funny nubuck type leather that makes marks if you brush your hand over it, wish toggi made other long riding boots in smarter style! Think I might just get some cheaper smart ones as it doesn't actually make sense for me to spend loads on something I won't wear that often even if they look lovely!

It wasn't even a struggle to do them up in the shop, such novelty!

They're beautiful ;.; I keep going back to look... realistically, the level of show I'm doing at the moment, they'd probably be ok... better than nothing, right?!

Do you actually have any 'cheaper smart ones' in mind? I couldn't even find those. Just looking at a picture of me in these awful leather-look chaps and they've sworn me off too-short boots/chaps for life :( I don't mind cheap, but they've gotta be long! And, uh, wide, apparently ;)

There are some by Sherwood forest that crop up on eBay shops sometimes, I don't know about the length as not tried but they have suede inner panels like the ariat ones! I love a bit of suede! I think they were about 50 quid, I have been looking at the Robinsons website and they have loads of cheaper long boots but no idea about the sizing, they have three shops but none near me!

Just measured my leg and they seem to be 19" floor to back of knee, we are basically leg twins so must report back when we find the dream boots haha!

Have you tried a pair of wide fitting ariat bromonts in extra long? They aren't very wide but would be worth a try, alternatively if you are a size 8/9 try men's boots. Mountain horse do men's versions of their styles that are longer and wider but otherwise the same.

That's a good idea, I was going to suggest looking at MH too if you hadn't already. Depending on the style you're after, I think they're all pretty generous in the calf (wide fittings are wide on me, I actually fit in their standard for once)! But I think the High Rider II is the most generous of the range. It comes in black and brown, is comfy and sturdy and is about £125-170 depending where you buy it. I'm not sure if they do different lengths - possibly, but then the standard length might be quite long in a size 8 anyway.

They do short and regular length, and I find them a bit short, but I have small feet and they get longer as they go up the sizes. They do a standard and wide calf, and although I need a wide in Ariat Bromonts a wide is a bit too wide in MH. Having said that the standard is a bit narrow really, but again in a bigger size they will be more generous.

I'd look at Men's in MH they look exactly the same and will give you more length and width. It might be worth looking at Mark Todd and Ariat Men's boots too, The standard height and width will be greater in mens and mens normally start at an 8. It is also worth considering going up a size, I go for a foot size bigger to get the larger leg in long boots and then use insoles/thick socks to pad out.

Boots marketed for the UK tend to be made shorter to suit the tastes and size demographic of the UK. In the USA, you wouldn't be caught dead in boots that are too short so manufacturers tend to make them very long for the US market (it doesn't matter if you are short or tall in North America, your boots have to cut into the backs of your knees!) :D ). I'm 5'9" and this is something I've noticed since moving to the UK from Canada so I often have to buy boots from the US Ebay or buy them in person when I go to Canada to visit family as no boot is made long enough over here for my taste and height.

I find unless you want to go custom or pay through the nose for Broginis or DeNiros, etc, then Ariats are the best for tall people who don't have very thin legs but you have to either special order the tall/full (they are do a "plus" size calf) as not many tack shops stock that size here in the UK or buy them from a US website.

After recommendations from a few friends, I'm waiting for a new pair to arrive from Fuller Filles. Hope they will fit as I've had a nightmare trying to find boots for big calves! They are currently on offer at £127 plus postage.

Interesting as I'm struggling to find a pair of the longer length bromonts at the moment. They are the first boots I have ever tried on that have been long enough and I'm only 5ft8! I don't understand why they don't have longer lengths over here as boots that aren't up to your knee look horrible and there are lots of tall people around. DH is seriously considering having made to measure boots next time he needs show boots as he struggles for length so much.

Hee! I like leg twins :D

Took a look at the Ariat Bromonts and they look to be lovely leather, but a bit out of my price range - and I'm not too keen on the laced styles ;)

These look promising - quite 'manly' but perhaps beggars can't be choosers! Definitely something to check out if I can find in store to try on, thanks.

Have a look at Kanyons.... they list all their measurements... maybe the Ash, that looks like the Ariat Grasmere?

Aaw, got all excited by that size chart but they're all country boots!

Look at the Mountain Horse Sportive if the High Rider II is a bit too chunky for you (though they are popular boots for ladies) the sportive is less chunky and more of a competition boot than a work boot. They do a wide fit, and they are cut longer than the high rider.

I like those! Really nice :D Thank you!

If I've got my cm/inches conversion right they might be a bit of a close fit but not too far off at all - definitely worth a try on, they're lovely :)

They have elasticated panels, I was between standard and wide fitting and went for the standard, the first few weeks they were pretty hard to fasten but they loosened up and gave a bit pretty quickly.

Also check the size chart and see whether going up a size or half a size will give you more leg width. That is what I'm going to do for my next pair.

After trying on every long boot in Rideaway, including the mens (most of which I couldnt get up my calves) I got ARIAT GLACIERS theyre all leather, and have two sets of lacing, so one does the ankle and another bit for my calf, theyre snug but they go on and are comfy when riding :D
PS Im also an 8 and have 17'' calves :o

Ditto try men's boots. I've got the length problem but very skinny legs, & whether in shops or horsey car boots, any boots which look long enough always turn out to be twice too wide & men's size 8 or more. Plus have a look at good quality second hand ones. An older pair that have already been stretched a bit will fit a wider leg than they did new.

brogini/deniro boots all the way! they 'make them to order' and you can have any combined sizes that you want...... i had the 2nd highest lenght and widest calf...also have flat feet and these are soooo comfy, no squashed feet!
after splitting 2 pairs of size 10 mens ariat boots i gave up with them and went for brogini - in a size 8!, although more expencive they already outlasted the ariats by 2 years!

I used to have this problem ;D Oh how I wish that was my complaint now LOL :D Riding boots didn't used to be a problem, but fashion boots were always too wide if they were above a size 7.

I've got quite a nice old pair of leather riding boots, worn to comfort, but I already broke one of the pull straps trying to get them on so I won't be trying that again in a hurry!

Well, been shopping today with the OH's credit card - tried on loads of boots from Le Chameau to Ariat's, to Toggi - must have tried on at least a Dozen types. But perseverance won - I am now the proud owner of the most comfortable fitting boots I could hope for - Toggi Canyons in Extra wide - yep the cheapest but the best fit - my OH is delighted - he was expecting to pay at least £300 but got away lightly with £110 - the only problem they are my Christmas present so I'm not allowed them til Christmas day :(
