'Oh my horse is sooo dangerous'

'He's impossible to load/shoe/etc...nobody could make him, he's soooo dangerous and hard'

And these people who then WILL NOT TAKE ADVICE, because their horse is soooooooo impossibly dangerous and difficult and nothing will fix them...so their owners just have to put up with their desperately dangerous behaviour.

Are you emplying that there is no such thing as a genuinely dangerous/psychologically messed-up horse? Or are you talking about those who think their horse is dangerous, when actually he's a pussycat? :D

Obviously if you know these horses/owners well, and the steps they've taken then you're justified to be concerned, but otherwise do you think it's possible you might not know the whole story. I only say this because I cannot stand the culture on some yards where it is acceptable to pass judgement and criticise people with no real basis on which to do it.

No offence intended.

Hmmm, I'm having some problems with my mare, she's jumpy and nervous to the point of being a bit dangerous.

I DO seek advice, but I don't take it unless I think it's good advice. If it makes sense to me, I might take the advice. But if I disagree with it or it involves behaviour I'm not comfortable with (like hitting her!) I won't take it.

I think the best way of offering advice is to give it if it's asked for, but don't feel insulted if the person doesn't follow it.

I'm currently pooling all sensible suggestions about my Mollie into a sort of mix, and in time I'll come up with my own way through our problems. It has to feel right for me.

BeBop-horse is a pussycat....I wouldn't object if he was actually a nightmare!!

It's the attention seeking, look at me, i make my horse misbehave so I look good behaviour. It makes me want to smack someone!

Oh I love being on our own yard....!

Why would someone who makes their horse misbehave think they look good?
Do you really think thats the case, or do they more need help as they dont really know what theyre doing . Could it be theyre someone whose pissed you off a bit wi there poor handling and youre venting

I don't know, I think maybe there ARE some people who think their badly-behaving animals make them look good. Like the sort of dog-owners who think having a dangerous dog makes them look "hard".

Perhaps there's a horse-owner equivilent of the Status Dog owner? If that's the case, I'm very glad to say there aren't any on our yard! They all seem a pretty sane, sensible bunch.

FionaM12, you're bang on with the status dog thing.

And they have them because it makes them look good-at least they can handle their horse type thing...everyone else would be too rubbish.

I cannae get that a poorly behaved horse makes you look good, especially if its dangerous .....look like an eejit yes, good no .
I think its a pretty dangerous situation, if a poor handler with an agressive horse, thinks they look good, that would freak me out a bit as its an accident waiting to happen.

It doesn't make them look good, they just think it does. Having a screwed up staffie snapping on the end of a chain doesn't make lads look good either.

In both cases it actually makes them look what they really are: stupid, irresponsible and cruel.

I know someone like this; "Watch out, don't do this/that/the other or 'e'll 'ave you!!!" Rubbish. Horse was fine. Just needed boundaries.

I've noticed this a lot at most of the local shows I've been to this season. Winding your horse up enough so that it constantly rears, spins and broncs really isn't impressive - and it doesn't make them look like a good rider because they can 'sit 5 rears in a row' and then have a laugh with their mates at their 'naughty ponio'. Urgh really gets on my nerves!!

What really annoys me is the people who you warn . Keep away, dont go near this horse. Of course they all think they are monty Roberts and the next thing is the poor horse has dragged someone over the door.Silly knowalls who think they can do in five minutes what you have been working on for months. result the horse becomes even more confused.

Mike, people are amazingly foolish when warned about animals. My sister worked in a zoo. There was a huge domed leopard cage, and round it at a safe distance a safety fence, so that humans and leopards were kept apart.

Despite all warnings, parents used to lift their little children over the outer fence so that they could have a closer look at the leopards.......

Exactly marmalade :)

I think you do see a lot of it at shows-people winding their horses up so they are naughty and everyone can go 'oh well sat' 'wow you must be incredible...'

Just like children, horses need boundaries.

But some adults are still children ..............

At the end of the day 95% of all horses and ponies are stronger than us humans and can easily splat us if they wished too or if they have their attention on something else to the point of forgetting you are there. The day you forget this is the day you put someone in danger.

9 times out of 10, I find that the horse is no problem, really the owner does not find the horse a problem (hence won't take help as not really needed!) - but likes to "big them up" to make themselves look more impressive to their peers..... I just roll my eyes and leave them to it!
