I am a very nervous rider, probably caused by unsafe riding experiences as a child, and then accidents I have had as an adult. As any nervous rider knows, I long to be able to ride without fear and really enjoy my loverly horse, and wholey due to his calm and patient nature, slowly ,at the moment,I am having somesuccess. At times when I have felt quite desperate about my riding fears, I have done some searches about getting help with my nerves, but I have come to the conclusion that there are people out there who are only too aware of how desperste nervous riders can feel and are really taking financial advantage. For example I was charged 145 quid for a 2 hour telephone consultation which was supposed to teach techniques to manage fear. In reality I had a problem retaining the information , which although usefull would have been available to me if I had done a search on nlp.I also question the integrity of anyone who offers to help someone they have never seenand whose horse they have never assessed with techniques to cope with fear. Has anyone else had experience of this.

Yes I was told by someone over the phone to squirt water on my horse's neck when he napped out hacking by a so called behavioural expert-advice which would have been dangerous had I actually tried it. I was really struggling with this horse and she knew it, I was desperate for advice, although I wasn't actually charged on that occasion.

I have used a fantastic NLP/sports performance coach. First initial appointment was free where I could ask any questions, without a doubt she has bent over backwards to help me, has charged a reasonable amount for her time, & has helped me with some deep seated problems. I think you need to be very careful who you choose to help you, it is such a relief when someone tells you they can help you, that it would be very easy to be taken advantage of.

sorry to hear your having problems :(

As part of my uni degree we did an equestrian psychology module which was basically psychology of the rider & how to overcome fears, set goals, etc. The lecturer we had was Tina Bettison, might be worth googling her as I think she offers some sort of consultation (shes also written a couple of books on other subjects) I didnt use her to work on issues myself, but she was a good lecturer!

ooooooooooo teabags i wish yu werent pming cos im reading this with interest - im exactly the same xxx

Haha well I'm not going to spill my "woe is me" guts to everyone, you know!!
And I am VERY superstitious. I had TFT and it really helped me. But I am paranoid that if I tell everyone about it, the magic will disappear in a puff of smoke and I will be all scared again.

Let teasle tell you all about it if she/he (probably she - men don't suffer with this nerves rubbish and, if they did, they would rather die than admit it) wants to :D

Thank you for replying. I am having problems replying to private messages, so thank you Miss Molly but I am not local to you,and thank you Teabags mum but I did not use the same person. My therapist nowdays is my horse, every day I juist get on and do what I can.I just think that I fell for some clever marketing, and felt the person was uunsrupulous.

the active rider people that run those FAb horse camps do a special horse camp for people who have confidence issues. it looks ACE, i really want to go x

I just looked properly at your thingy, clipcloppop (Avatar? Not been here long, technophobe) and I LOVE your fork/spoon thing, it's really funny!

And what camp, where? I've read a couple of things about adult horse camp recently - 1 was at Vale View and was a general fun/instruction thing and the other was in Horse and Hound and was about Bootcamp - but it was very dressagey and I am a SJ girly. I haven't been on holiday for 8 years, as I have Teebag and 3 mad dogs to look after, so a holiday with my horse would be fabfabfab.
