the word is 'conformation' not 'confirmation'

the word is 'appalling' not 'appauling'

the word is 'bargain' not 'bargin'

I'm not the spelling police, god knows we all have the odd typo, but I keep seeing these words over and over again and find it quite irritating

Very brave! Well done! Couldn't quite bring myself to do it, but I also find it irritating. However, I've been on enough forums where people have accused me of flaming when I mention glaring mistakes (not typos), so I tend to shy away from it now.

I am a teacher, though, so I naturally bawk at mistakes such as 'hayledge' and mixing up there/their/they're or your/you're.

i try to spell things correct but if people have problemswith spelling then it doesn`t really bother me as long as i can understand them.

this may be better posted in soapbox.this is the horsey room.

I can cope with the odd typo - we all do it but have to agree on conformation!

The one that really gets me is must/would/could/should of rather than must/would/coul/should have

I'm sure I'm guilty of spelling thigs wrong - don't have time while at work to type into notepad etc and run spell check when answering quickly.

From what I understand talking to youngsters these days, kids aren't penalised for spelling/grammar these days (or not locally to me) as it discourages them from expressing themselves - god help them when they have to write a letter for a job application!

I am the world's worst at spelling. Partly because i have always been that way but partly due to a past illness.
I don't mind being picked up on it. One very kind HHO completly re-did our show schedule but she was very nice about the mistakes.
We cannot all be good at everything and some people do have problems other than lack of education.
This is not a moan about the post but a view from the other side

We all make mistakes! Christ ! some of us type all day at work and so seem to relax a little with spelling when we can. I did not reliase that there will be teachers and marking on these posts.

Surely as long as the message is getting across then who cares.

Get a life. I have left school many many years ago.

I do not see any sense of humour in the original post ! some people obviously just like picking fights and making those who are guilty of being the subject of your post a little, if not totally, embarrased and scared of posting again in case they get slated for such a stupid thing as spelling.

spelling isn't stupid - I wouldn't be proud about an inability to spell correctly - its one of the things that I find slightly annoying as well and I find it a matter of personal pride to post with correct spelling, although obviously I do make mistakes, albeit seldom

PMSL at Shilasdair..

Oh, get a sense of humour people, I found the post quite funny but, d_v, if you don't mind me saying, you're asking for a flaming.
grin.gif

Poor spelling and grammar irritates me intensely; I will purposefully go back and edit a post if I see I've made a typing error. But I won't pick people up on it, as much as I wish I could, because they'll probably take offence and I would hate to appear rude or even hypocritical; even 'us academics' make mistakes..

LOL.

I think there are ways and means of helping people, as in the case with Silver_Florin and the show shedules. My brother is severely dyslexic and really struggles with spelling, so if I do ever bring up spelling and grammar, it's only in a nice way to help people rather than to make people feel sh!t. At the end of the day, most people don't spell badly because they choose to or are lazy, it's because they a) genuinely believe that is how it is or b) they have difficulty with language (like my brother) anyway.

I really don't think things like 'confirmation' are laziness. I still think this was a brave post, nonetheless.

As for baulk: I hold my hands up to that one, but it's one of those words I tend to say quite a lot but never write because it is quite 'slangy'. Well, I wouldn't write on the end of a child's piece of writing 'your spelling and grammar made me baulk' anyway.

Also, as a teacher, it is natural for me to pick up on mistakes, but I've only ever once highlighted them on a forum, and I believe it was text speak type things. I don't think there's a need to make people feel bad about their spelling/grammar. As a teacher, I spend my time trying to make children feel confident about their writing, not making them feel crap about the whole thing just because of a few mistakes.

We're all good at some things and not so good at others. The people on here who aren't tiptop spellers and admit it, are probably far more logical than I am!

to be honest i think there is no need for posts such as this, generally i am good at spelling but i would never tell anyone on here if they were not, even if its written on a general post, just no need.

some people are very embarassed about their spelling and some have dyslexia, i just dont think there is any need what so ever to do this
you can tell me to lighten up, but i am already there dear so dont bother, i think maybe you need to lighten up and accept that not everyone's spelling is impeccable
wink.gif

as said, its a forum not an english exam

Yep, I am the same as Shaab I think, in a way. I would not make a post like this because a) we all make mistakes/typos/have words we cannot spell for the life of us; b) I don't like to hurt/humiliate people or make people think that if they can't spell they have no place here. The world won't end if someone uses 'of' instead of 'have' - that is a mistake born of dialect, not ignorance!
