I've seen it done before with no ill effect, but are there any that I should avoid at all costs and are there any you recommend?

I was thinking of getting this one http://www.poundland.co.uk/images/4230/original/alberto-balsam-apple.jpg since you can get it in Poundland and it seems like a good make, but I'm quite unsure!

Also, anything human that'll make horses manes/tails/coats shine? I looked at horse stuff the other day and it's far too expensive for me! I'd just like a better turnout at the shows next year :p

We used value stuff for ages... You have to use value conditioner, but it works pretty well. Only Reg's coat got bleached as he started doing some more showing so we ended up using stuff that's meant to enrich the coat colours, spoilt pony! (it worked!)

I use tesco value shampoo, 22p for a 500ml bottle! Then you don't have to worry about splodging loads on.... Tesco value furniture polish is also good as mane and tail conditioner.... My little coblet is a walking tesco advert!

well i used to use fairy liquid on my pony years ago and it never did him any harm. If anything i find horse shampoos need to be stronger than the human kind. I wouldnt fancy washing my own hair with the bottle of 'gallop' I have sat out in the yard.:D

Thanks again :) Glad I can use the cheapo stuff! Shows are expensive enough as it is!

I'm even using the pretty white ribbon used to tie the ends of crackers for bows in his mane XD

I agree with the tesco value stuff - I use loads of shampoo on a coloured so buy really cheap stuff so I can dollop it on. I shampoo then rinse and then condition her tail, brush it through before rinsing conditioner off and it always leaves a really nice shine and very silky tangle free :)

May I ask what happened? Symptoms etc? I don't plan on using that brand (No Asda around here anyway!) but just so I can look out for it.
I hope your horse was alright!

I washed him with the shampoo in the afternoon and got a call a few hours later to say he wasn't right.
He had big swollen patches all over his chest and neck, was sweating and generally miserable.
The vet was up within 20 minutes and gave him a steroid injection.
I felt so bad :( I use Naf teatree now

I use Johnson's Baby Shampoo in the summer, when it's warm enough to bath properly. It gives a lovely shine on my bay's coat, is surprisingly effective on white socks, and leaves mane, tail and coat very soft. I also use Batista dry shampoo on stable stains, very handy for competition mornings, and it's not too bad for reviving a lank mane from being covered by a full neck rug. The only downside is that horses may not like the sensation, as the dry shampoo is stronger coming out of the spray can than horse products.

I use Aussie 3minute Miracle as a conditioner on my horse (mane&tail only, not the rest of him). I only give it a very rudimentary rinse off,so his mane&tail stay silky soft for ages(no illl effects either&he has quite sensitive skin)

I've used quite a few, thanks to 17h worth of white legs :p

Fairy liquid is great but is too harsh for billy in winter (pink skin) sO would either use something with tea tree/aloe vera or baby shampoo :)

For shows he gets whitening shampoo and magic green spot remover for hIs knees and hocks (he lives out and lies down a lot!)
