Twice now I have been in clothes shops and there have been people in there carrying chihuahuas. Why do people think its ok to take these dogs into shops when it clearly says "no dogs" on the door?? Both times, the shop assistants saw the dogs, and nobody said anything
crazy.gif
I'm pretty sure that if I walked in carrying my bloodhound pup I'd be asked to leave in a second
mad.gif
Sorry for the little rant, it just really annoys me that people seem to forget that toy breeds are still dogs, no matter how tiny they are or what "clothes" they are wearing

I would never take my dogs if I knew I planned to go into shops and had no-one with me to stand outside with them. Too much of a chance of them being nicked!

Chihuahuas are worth a good bit of money (over here they start at like £900) so I could smuggle one in I would too for fear it would go missing!

I *think* that the health and safety issue that sparked all this no dogs in shops rules was a worry over the dogs' feet being dirty and making the floor dirty, so carrying the dog does alleviate this worry which might be why there are no complaints.

Personally I think dogs do not pose such a huge hygiene issue as people think and should be welcome in many more places. I love travelling to France, there are dogs everywhere! In shops, in coffee shops, in restaurants! The dogs are all really well behaved, probably from being allowed to go everywhere and see everything, and they are a pleasure to see!

EDITED for typo!

Ditto what GinaB says, I would never ever leave mine tied up outside a shop, greyhounds are far too tempting for idiot undesirables who think they can course them
mad.gif

But then it would never occur to me to take my dogs if I was going shopping anyway

Booboos - I loved that about France! Their dogs are such a huge part of their lives! I told Beastie all abou and she huffed and said she wanted the same treatment here
grin.gif

If me and OH go down the town together and walk, Beastie comes too and we take turns going into shops and then one stands outside.

Tina can't go into crowds so wouldn't take her whereas the Midget takes too long saying hello to everyone she meets!

'OH MY GOD! There's a beuacheron, can I go say 'hi'? PLEEEEASE!!!!!!!!'

Hello, I'm back after a whole internet-free weekend (thanks BT
mad.gif
)

Henry has come into the Southwold Joules shop with me, they like dogs in there. He has even sat in the changing room while I tried, although like a true bloke he started grumbling and whinging about how long I was taking
grin.gif

I got accidentally sucked into the trade stands at Burghley (I was lost) and it was awful, ended up carrying Henry, the great lump! Although Badminton on SJ day was fine as there were fewer people and he ended up in the changing rooms again

I don't understand people who take dogs shopping!

I was in Chesterfield the other week and this tarty woman was tottering down the street dragging a poor french bulldog (?) behind her, who was obviously trying to do a poop. Aside from the disgustingness of dog crap in a busy shopping area the bint was totally unaware and dragged it along as it was trying to squat.

Couldn't help but let her know and shoved some poop bags in her face.

I'm always prepared

I didn't do it on purpose, I was just trying to find the start box, then I got disorientated and couldn't find the way out again! I could still be there yet had I not stumbled upon an exit. I could have died!

It was most traumatic

The shop I work in (clothes shop) is in a town frequented by holiday makers off the nearby canal. Of course that is the type of holiday people take dogs on so we do sometimes get people asking if dogs can come in, and my boss has no objection to well behaved dogs as long as they sit quietly with their owners. I would never take my dogs shopping as would certainly not leave them tied up outside.

Otto went throught the trade stands several times over the course of the weekend
grin.gif
He didn't go in the shops, apart from the doggy ones. He also had to be surgically removed from my leg by the end of the weekend
grin.gif

We avoided the busiest parts and my 6ft4 OH (who is rather wide!) was sent first to clear a route
grin.gif

He goes shopping all the time too
grin.gif
The garden centre over the road allows dogs, as do PaH and Jollyes, and I have a list of local pubs that allow dogs (some even in the restuarant area!!), as a result I now have a dog who can walk through crowds unfazed and will sit quietly when necessary in the midst of hustle and bustle.

I do find it annoying that people can carry Toy Breeds into shops that state No Dogs, and have often wondered what the reaction would be if I carried Otto in

Henry is a regular in Jolleys too, he has a special mate in there who feeds him biscuits
grin.gif

Basically if I'm out and about and I want to go into a shop, I'll ask if he can go in and if he can he does - he's been to the bank, the dry-cleaners, the little hardware shop, shoe shops, the letting agents, various pet shops and friendly clothes shops - walking shops are very good for dog access I find. I wouldn't set out to go on a special shopping trip with him though, it's just that he happens to be with me at the time if you see what I mean
smile.gif

He has been to lots of pubs
blush.gif
and even into the food area of one lovely pub, which I thought would be far too posh for us but he behaved really well (we went straight after work, he was going to wait in the car but it was thundering and I thought he would freak)! And he has been all the way to then end of Southwold Pier. He is a well travelled dog! And everytime we go out he behaves a little better

I actually think that getting your dog out and about in crowds (town centres) etc is brilliant for socialisation. Otto was so deprieved of human contact as a pup (can I hear violins!?) that he was convinced every single human around was there specifically to talk to him.
If we hadn't been able to take him to shops, through crowds etc, that were so busy most people didn't see him, he would never had realised that wasn't the case!
We live out in the sticks, and on walks he might see one other dog walker, who is more than happy to give him fuss. I would have ended up with a Spaniel that launches at everyone he meets!!

My Dad takes his dogs into town to get them used to birds taking off in front of them and not chasing after them
grin.gif
Where else can you guarantee a controlled environment full of birds??

Should be working.....

When I lived in Birmingham I used to take my old cocker with me when I went shopping to the market at the end of the road. She used to be made a fuss of by all the stallholders and the butchers and bakers used to let her in as she was well behaved!
smile.gif
The butchers used to find a 'treat' for her as well.........
wink.gif

I have say where I live now there are always dogs 'parked' outside the shops - most of the shops have water bowls outside them too!! I personally don't take Max or Sweep shopping - St Sweep would be on the phone to International Dog Rescue (spoilt brat!
blush.gif
) and I can only imagine the kind of chaos Max could create after his vets visit..........

Stella is a big shopper . In fact, dogs of any size are welcome in 99% of Manhattan shops. Last weekend we met a Pit Bull and a Great Dane in Sephora, so there's definitely no discrimination when it comes to size.

Not that I shop very often
tongue.gif
but it was and is a fantastic way to socialise your dog with strangers and children of all sizes. And yes, Stella walks on all four legs when she browses
grin.gif

Tummy rubs and dog treats behind the counter are an added bonus.

Otto has never once lifted his leg, I have a feeling there was no strong male role models in his puppyhood and he doesn't know boy dogs aren't supposed to squat!
grin.gif
It does mean I can walk through shops safe in the knowledge he won't be peeing on anything

Stella once took a dump in Grand Central Station, but I attribute her mistake to the ceiling height and vastness of the place. I mean, it probably did seem like we were outdoors
tongue.gif

We've had no such issues in shops, thank goodness. Sometimes she likes to sleep in the changing rooms, and at other times the shop assistants want to stroke her and make a fuss. One time an assistant was so besotted, that she took Stella downstairs to the stockroom to help with inventory duties. And off went Stella, not even looking back

Last time I took Henry into Jollyes, one of the assitants asked me if I was ok, I said I was browsing and he then directed me to the poobags, causing me to become paranoid that Henry had managed to drop one without me noticing, and retrace my steps around the shop looking for landmines (there weren't any!)

He has only really disgraced himself once, in a local little petshop where they foolishly keep chews and pigs ears in open containers at floor level - one lunge later and my bill had suddenly increased!
mad.gif

Actually, maybe not foolish - maybe it's a cunning technique to increase their sales!
