At work today a lady came in enquiring about a feed for her native pony that is overweight and not in any work. She wanted to feed it a mix because it "looks nice", she then proceeded to tell me that she can only have a bag that weighs 15Kgs or less because it wont fit in her feed bin!

Now the only mix that we sell in a 15Kg bag is a conditioning mix and thats the one she left with!, No amount of telling the lady that this was really NOT the correct type of feed for her pony worked!. I feel sorry for that poor pony

. With spring not too far away, something tells me her vet bills may be increasing this year.

Yes i know the mind boggles. Sadly she is not the only one, although i managed to persuade the gentleman and his grandaughter that came in a while back that choosing a different feed for their newly aquired horse every time they needed more, to give it a wee change, was not a good idea. They are now regular customers and ask advice on anything they are not sure on.

Could you have refused to serve her? She might get angry but it might make her think.

You say she came in to ask, you clearly have more patience than me, I would have insisted she listened - hence I dont do your job.

Yes, i suppose i could have refused to serve her, but what would be the result? she would just go somewhere else and the same thing, or worse might happen. I am hoping she will come back and i can persuade her to try something else...ie free plastic feed bin ( which is more than adequate to hold a 20kg bag), when you buy our oat free, low molasses stable mix, its the only one we sell, apart from big brands that would come close to what she wants.

I guess some people won't listen - I certainly don't envy u ur job!! A friend of mine worked in a countrywide stores for a while and had to leave because so many people came in, asked for advice then did the opposite.

I also end up talking people out of buying feed than selling it.

I get fed up with people asking me what to feed there fat pony/horse, when I say nothing , or HI Fi Lite , they look at me as if I'm mad, Doh.

I did try to talk her into feeding Hi Fi Lite but she said that wouldn`t fit in her feed bin. The suggestion to not bother with hard feed at all was met with a look of utter disgust and a rather sharp comment of " he needs to eat something!!!".

Refusing to serve her, i think, would just make the problem worse, in that she would go somewhere else that might not question what she is feeding. I am hoping she will come back and i can try to persuade her to feed something else, ( by telling her that the mix she`s been buying is out of stock, then throw in the free bin offer) got to be worth a try.
