has anyone swapped a horse onto Pure condition & found they didn't need to feed the same levels they fed of their existing feed?

i ask as i've been tempted by Pure feeds a few times now, but, i have a horse that drops weight the minute he gallops, (& drops alot!) which makes for an interesting hunting & then season....

so, as you can imagine he eats ALOT of feed, (Baileys endurance, alfa A oil & adlib hay FYI), but pure feeds suggest he may only need 2kg of Pure condition/day, & i was wondering how this translates into real terms, i.e. if you previously feed say 5kg other brand condition/comp feed, what do you now feed of PC to maintain the same weight?

thank you muchly.... champagne on offer tonight ;)

Yes, I used to feed about 4kg of hard feed into my black horse who is really hard to keep weight on. He is demonstrably fatter and shinier on 1kg of Pure Condition. I don't feed 2kg as I find the horses actually leave their haylage if fed that amount. I've been quite convinced by it actually and would continue feeding it, even at full price.

A mix of Bailey's No 4, Baileys No. 19, Alfa-A Oil and Speedibeet with additional oil and linseed. I think part of it is that he's not overfaced by his feed - he will eat his Pure Feed with gusto but used to pick at the other stuff. I add in a bit of linseed to his Pure feed but I think that's more reassurance for me than for him, TBH...

I didn't weigh previous feed, but it was about 3 rounded Stubbs scoops (one each of conditioning cubes, sugar beet and Alfa A Oil) twice daily. He now has a 'nearly-full' scoop of Pure Condition for breakfast and two nearly-full scoops for tea. It's about 30% less than Pure Feeds recommended and he's doing very well on it.

Ps. I only answered because of the champagne :p

I swapped from A&P calm and condition+copra+alfa oil + ad lib hay on my 17h KWPN. He always dropped weight in winter.
He now gets Pure EASY and of the ten bags I bought half price back in October I still have 2 left! He needs to lose a bit more weight before the spring grass come through. I cannot believe the difference in his condition, temperament and my bank balance. Its FAB!

Yep, I've evented mine all last season on half a scoop of Pure Easy - they'd recommend a scoop twice a day for him. I started giving him more over the winter when the grass went but he was looking far too well. I feed far less than I did when feeding topspec balancer/alfalfa high fibre/speedi beet.

Early days for me but mine has considerably less weight of hard feed on pure condition than she was having before. She has 2kg of pure condition a day. Before to keep her at a decent weight she was on 2kg conditioning cubes plus a big scoop of speedibeet and one of chaff plus oil.

I do keep being very tempted to try Pure Feeds. Does anyone know if it is any good for a big lazy warmblood who needs more oomph (without silliness!) and which one to use?

^^ I would ring them. I had a very informative and instant response from their nutritionist over the phone. Also its worth asking minimum amount that can be fed in case your horse doesnt need the RDA of feed to still get RDA of vits/mins. If you are/need to feed less quantity than the minimum their nutritionist advises you should swap to one of their lower cal feeds so they can still get all the vits/mins they should. Its a really good system I think :). Im swapping all of mine onto their balancer when I get low- its a little more expensive to feed than my current balancer but has a lot more in it :)

I swapped mine firstly onto the pure condition after she had surgery, and once she had regained her weight and was back in work, onto the pure working. It suits her down to the ground and she's on half a scoop twice a day :)

I swapped from a sports mix with Alfa a to pure working he was on pure condition but was looking too well, so he now has two scoops of pure working 17.2 tb1/4 hanoverian . Use just under a bag a week so compares with my original feed bill but a lot easier.

Am just about to swap to pure condition from pure working but am loving my TB on pure feeds, used to be A&P power & performance, herbichop, haylage balancer & blue chip. They recommend 2.2 kg for him so will be interested to see how he gets on.

Interesting to read this as I've just started the horse on pure condition. Been umming & ahhing about it for ages. So far horse is a.eating it(can be very fussy) &
b.not gone nuts yet...( he's very, very sensitive & the most unlikely feeds send him crackers). I've started on half ration as he also has a teeny appetite & gets overfaced by big feeds.

I swapped mine from alfa-a original and d+h staypower cubes onto pure working. I feed him a scoop twice a day along with naf pro feet and haylage balancer. His condition is fab, he concentrates so much more and isnt looking for things to spook at like he was before. Suits him very well!

I changed to the Pure Fibre Balance, which is supposed to be the lowest energy feed, and he definitely has more "go." In fact he is quite spooky. He looks well. I am not 100% sure, but I am on my third order, so I suppose I must be happy. I will see how he behaves at the next competition we go to.

Jojo_, just out of interest, my boy was on haylage balancer too, thought I'd give him a go without as Pure feeds are supposed to be complete & he's been great without it (& trust me, he seriously needed it!) Just a thought, makes things a bit cheaper!

Another one reading with interest as feeding my boy is a) costing a lot and b) he's still looking a bit weedy at the moment!

Those who feed it, if for example you need to feed 2kgs, how much does that equate to in stubbs scoops? He hasn't the biggest appetite and so I've gone down the route of dense calories (balancer and outshine with some Alfa A Oil) which is not cheap by any means.

I'm not sure how much of it is the fact that he's wintered out and always looks a bit 'meh' this time of year (compared to april/may when he looks fab!) but with so many success stories PF is sounding tempting..

I've been wracking my brains and t'internet about what to feed my top horses, one is bad to keep weight on all year (particilarly this time of year!) and whilst at tournaments and the other that looks like a haggard broodmare. This sounds like it might be my answer! Do you need to feed anything else with it (e.g. alfa a) or do you just place in bucket and add water?

I am very interested in this post. Do you have to buy a certain number of bags to make it worthwhile. Also I feed Pink Powder and MagOx also Supercalm to my mare with TS Cool Nuts and Spillers conditioning chaff. If I fed PF would I still need to feed the Magox and Supercalm, I know PF has vits in so would not need PP. She is TB and rather nervous hence Supercalm, also I need to maintian her weight.

Ive been feeding Pure to my horses for the last 6 months.
All mine look great and im feeding far less than the recommended amount, instead giving ad lib haylage to balance it out.

I have 3 horses on it, 2 feeds a day and 10 bags of Pure Easy is lasting 8 weeks.

ETS - i also have my retired ones and foalies on happy hoof and pure balance. I find the 3 big horse on Pure easy eat MUCH slower then the others, great as my mare normally bolts her feed.

Easiest thing in the world to feed! Scoop in bowl, bit of water, done. Mine was on numerous supplements as well before I started him on this, including a calmer & a balancer, he's now on none. I pretty much use a bag a week on a 16.3hh TB who can be prone to skinny, am going to try the conditioning one just to get a bit more weight on but he's done really well on the working. Really strange feeding this, just seems too simple! But seems to work.

I'm another one really interested in this but for those of you who feed less than the RDA are you topping up with some sort of vit supplement/balancer?

It does seem lots of you are feeding less than recommended but I wonder how this effects the required vitamins.

To be honest I dont think i'm going to get another tub of the haylage balancer. I decided to get it as my yard's haylage is sometimes so nice its almost hay but other bales can be very wet. His droppings differed all the time. But the haylage balancer hasnt really changed that much anyway!

Apart from Pure Balance, all the other pure feeds and complete feeds so you feed it instead of a mix/cubes plus chaff. I put a scoop in a bucket, add my supplements and some water to make it a little more moist.

As far as I know (I work for an animal feed merchants) if you dont feed the RDA then you should top up with a balancer so your horse is getting the correct amount of vits and mins. But instead of spending lots on a balancer feed such as BlueChip etc, you can feed NAF Pink Powder which works out cheaper!

I do not feed the RDA,but I also use Pure Balance,so I know they are always getting enough vits and mins.

Hi abitodd, so if for example the RDA was 2kg but you were only feeding 1kg do you just feed half the RDA of Pure Balance?

Do you just use the balancer pellets (not the fibre balancer ) to top up the ration?
