When you came to your senses, what did you do instead?

I need inspiration. I'm 31 and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. :(

Horses, horses, horses, horses.... (just to make this harder to move to SB :D )

I left school and went to work in a polo yard in Sussex which lead to working with polo ponies in France (best days of my life - no ties, no money worries - wonderful), then I did hunters in the winter months, after 3 seasons I met my husband (now ex) in the local pub and that was it - gave up working with horses (at 22 or 23 can't remember that far back!!). I had been persuaded to 'do' typing at school, so glad I did. But brushed up my skills on a Training Opportunities Scheme (TOPS course now no longer) and worked in an office then I pursued my passion for photography and was very lucky and enjoyed a few years meeting and photographing wonderful people and their animals, doing their weddings, photographing the offspring and also freelance equestrian magazine work. Now I am still being 'creative' working on an Apple Mac for a print company. I still browse the 'vacancies' at the back of H&H each week and wonder how life would have been different. But I don't think I would have achieved half the things I have achieved if I had still been mucking out (and getting paid for it). I have my own lovely horses (and don't get paid for mucking out). :)

I went and worked in high level telesales/sales/customer service had my own business for a while, then nout. recently looked into a pet sitting/free lance groom/house sitting business but in reality .. my oh had a breakdown last year and i just dont have the get up and go to put the 20 hours a day in and his mental health could potentially jepodise clients so its a no go.

we now at the point of him goin gback to work, but in all honesty i cant do offices, and no point in me having a good well paid job as his mental health isnt stable so a high chance id losr my job, so for a good wage and good hours am debating caravan cleaning for the summer..

it sounds awful but its a good laugh and no penis winging at you all the timel.

when the times right i think i will give the petsitting business a go.

*ignore awful spelling was eating dinner and typing*

I was a riding instructress before I went to work for a major oil company (as a service station manager but that doesn't sound as interesting) and did that for 18 years. I then went to work in the prison service, then for criminal defence service before going into education admin followed by civil service. I don't regret leaving the horse industry at all.

Hello, I'm new on here but thought I might be able to usefully contribute to this discussion... I love horses, I eat, sleep and dream them and worked for several years as a groom at competition yards and then a stud... What did it for me was the poor pay... Yup, I like to be able to afford my own horse not shine other's!

Now I have a high paying job in Sales :D and I'm happier :D

I ended up in factories from my groom status,it didnt pay for my horse, cars and flamboyant lifestyle ;) ok my wkend's out on the peese, lmao, hated every minute of it :( have been in homecare for the last 5yrs,am now hating it to,not the actual job, most of them are fabulous people...but the pay is shite for what we do,and unfortunately when they die,if the company have no replacements you lose money...I have lost loads of money the last few months :( Cant help you as at 35 I still havnt a clue, and am guessing I never will :( x

having trained as riding instructer then spent my misspent 20's riding eventers, hunters and youngsters and buying and selling a few I damaged my spine. Then met a dodgy bloke:eek:
When he and I split I moved to ireland saying Id never have another horse as I didnt want to have the hassle of getting up at stupid oclock to water/feed/catch/patch up! I was given a foal! now have 3 ponies and cant work out how I thought id ever live without them!!!

if your hooked on horses then your hooked....forever!
Other jobs help pay for hay, farrier, wormers, feed etc but the time with the ponies is the best and I wanted my own ponies since I was a child! I dont want to grow up!!!
And working as vet nurse helps aswell ;)

I worked with international eventers in the UK,Switzerland and Germany, and competed young dressage horses - then came back to the UK, did my II and taught freelance for years - but decided horses were better as a hobby when I got divorced in my late twenties. Worked in a variety of offices, and sort of fell into PR. I'm now account director at a small PR agency and happy as anything, apart from being horseless after my horse had to be put down last year. Itching to get back on board, but not over keen on the idea of riding school horses...

Join the police!!! make sure they have a mounted section then you can work with horses and get a decent ish!!!! wage. Hmmmm if only it was that simple :D

I worked at a riding school and then an event yard before my mother said I had to get a real job! I'm now an independent nurse practioner and I enjoy it some days and it pays for pony so guess it works! But without a mortage I would of jumped at recent offer to groom for event rider at badminton! grrr I hate being a grown up!

Left school 16 trained and got bhsai. Married had children. Found out the hours and children don't mix. Stay at home mum. Re trained got a degree now a primary school teacher in special needs. Love job hate paperwork. Would work with horses again if I could at the drop of a hat. Would love to do therapy with them. Just now I am on a good wage it is difficult to make the jump.

I did a business degree with the Open Polytech in New Zealand. Am now an accountant/Office Manager.

I enjoy it but would rather be with the horses. I only gave up on them when age & iinjuries started to affect my safety around them.

Still teach and am a Pony Club 'B' Examiner

I was a qualified instructor, and spent a fair few years teaching and schooling horses etc. Then I got a job as a customer services assistant in a large chain store, had family and when the children were old enough worked as a supervisory assistant at the local village school. I then retired at the grand age of 42! :)
