I'm trying to decide on a diet for my EPSM horse when he comes home so just wanted to ask what you guys feed your horses/ponies?

Im going to use either alfa a oil or mollichaff alfalfa oil but cant decide on what to feed along with it, he doesnt (or didnt) like just chaff on its own!

Iv got ERS pellets for now but to be honest im on a limited budget feed wise and want him on the best high oil diet i can afford!

In my opinion forget the high fat special feeds, they are expensive and an inefficient way of getting the oil down. I feed a very small quantity of fibre nuts, vit and min supplement ( with elevated vit E) then add 300ml of rapesed oil mix together then add a large scoop of Falcon high fibre light and very watery alfa beet. He gets this twice a day and has been the most effective wayI've tried. Minimal extras and maximum oil. He never really liked the special diets and found soya oil too strong a flavour. Alfa Oil has too little oil in to really account for your horses oil intake but could help reduce it a little if he finds the oil too impalatable.

Warning though, take it very slowly increasing his oil levels. He will take some time to get used to it and you may need to keep dropping back down every now and then to help him adapt. My boy has been on the diet for over 3 years now but has only been really settled and happy with his food for the past year...lots of patience needed but it is so worth it.

Good luck and I hope you have a much happier horse in just a couple of months.
