I was just wondering if you have ever tried your horses on any on the medications from the vet and if so what were they and did you have any success with them?

Also do you find your horse suffer more each year?

Any has anyone retired there horses because of it and at what age were they?

Thanks on advance just trying to work out what best to do with my 10 year old.

Hello! My horse headshakes mainly through the months of late March to August, I think tree pollen and stress are his two major trigger factors. He always wears a nosenet but whether its made that much difference I don't know.
Lats year 2008 I tried him on an antihistamine called Ucerax aka Aterax, it didn't work. This year I tried him on steroids - didn't work and then early June time my vet suggested I try him on the antihistamine Cetirizine (aka Zirtek) and I've had 4 months with no symptoms now - fabulous!!

I also backed the antihistamine tablets up with sodium eyedrops which may have also helped. I've tried numerous feed supplements, some helped a bit but nothing like the Cetirizine. x

Is your horse sort of a confirmed head sheaker?

Generally, this means that this condition exists over longer time.

Basically, head shaking is only a sign of discomfort. It can have many causes from minor ones to chronical diseases.

When we bought our horse, he regularly started head shaking after about five minutes being ridden.
Changing the bit and the saddle solved the problem once and forever.
So, he was not really a head shaker in the narrower sense of the word.

Also, there is a large range of the severity of head shaking.

If it's not possibly for a vet to find out the cause then at least the horse should have a longer history of head shaking.
Otherwise, it could be everything of the minor causes some of them mentioned already in the former postings.
