For people insured with NFU, if your horse has to go to hospital for treatment do they cover transport costs? Asking on behalf of a friend, had a look on the website but its not much help!

Not normally I don't think, but they did pay for my friend's horse to be transported, she doesn't have her own transport and couldn't get a lift from anyone as it was an emergency, so ended up getting a whopping transport bill. Call them and discuss, they are normally very reasonable.

They paid for my transport, i don't have my own, as long as you get a reciept you should be ok, but agree with christmas sparkle, give them a call

Yes they will pay " reasonable " costs which i believe are about the 500 mark.

I was shocked to find out that they even pay milage if you have your own transport!

you can off set so much of your vet fees for transport so 5000 insured vets = 500 total transport. this paid for nearly 3 lots of transport when my boy had to go to leahurst

Yep, they were very good when my truck was written off just as Scooby started to go into Liphook and the clinic etc. I just made sure I had receipts. Oh wow? They pay your own milage?? Hmm must read my policy!

I had my own transport and still managed to claim some money back for thr various trips i had to make backward and forwards to the vet for my injured horse. They will pay 5% of the sum insured i think it is towards transport costs regardless of if it is your own transport or one you have hired in.

yes emergency transportation to vet covered as standard, as was mentioned reasonable costs considered say about 5-10% of Vet Fees limit of £5000 per incident. The way the underwriters look at it is if the horse gets to vet hosp asap there is less chance of a loss of animal claim which could cost much more so obv they are happy to cover the minimal charge to get the horse to vet! also pay 50% of hospitalisation costs if the horse needs to stay in
(i work for NFU btw)

I did ring soon after posting and was told that yes they would

all I needed to do was to send them mileage and to which journeys they match and they would pay at 50p per mile!!!! I will be able to claim just over £100

happy christmas me!!!

NFU are bloody brilliant, I really will not consider insuring with another company now.
When my horse had to return to work after 9 months off I didn't have the facilities required to do this properly so I sent him to a rehab yard, NFU not only paid the actual rehab bit but also half the livery charge while he was there.

Earlier this year when my policy was up for renewal they added a 50% premium on which was absolutely fair given they have paid out in the order of 12K on this horse. I decided not to carry on insuring said horse but asked for a quote on my 3yo. They were very apologetic but said they would have to apply the 50% premiums on his policy, but even with that the quote was comparable to other leading insurers so I didn't quibble in the slightest. 2 months on I receive a letter saying they had reviewed this policy and decided to deduct the 50%.
