What rug is your TB in now? Does it like living out?

Mine is stressy and weaves and is a bit of a pain when in, does not seem to like it at all, and he is trying living out. At mo in a 200g necked rug with 100g liner.

I have a 450g rug for real cold weather.

No horses live out at my yard except him and his companion, so I think I look very cruel having a TB out in winter! It's a little embarrassing and I feel peer pressure!

Who else has a TB living out? (or am I the only cruel owner? Sob, sob!!)

Mine is out! Saying that, she won't come in, she's happiest out stuffing her face, she has a warm middleweight at night, and a rain sheet/naked throughout the day. The rain sheet is not enough, however I want her to get a nice winter coat growing. You're not cruel. Just think, you won't have fluid filled legs, stiff joints and you'll keep fit too!

mine isnt a tb but is living out in a middle weight rug with neck currently. My friends tb is out in the same weight of rug with neck as he refuses to be stabled full stop. Providing they are well fed and have access to good quality hay there is no reason they can't live out. People tend to mollycoddle their horses today a bit too much and if your horse is unhappy living in there is no reason you can't try him living out

She loves living out and hates being stabled. At the moment she's naked during the day as we've been having sunny days. At night she's in a 200g Amigo as it's dropping below freezing. She's not clipped and is retired.

She's on the right (photo taken winter 2010-11).

Oh thanks, this makes me feel better. It's the first tb I have owned. Just had email recently from the person I bought him frommclearly horrified that he is out, asking if I rug him and he has access to hay (clearly of course he has... Bt it's funny - I guess for him getting a tb to live out is close to cruelty!).

I may just print. And laminate that pic of the horses eating in the snow and tie it to my gate!

Its funny on old yard everything lived out and I would not have felt guilty, but here I feel real guilty as I am the odd one out!

His winter coat is good, I only just aged the 100g liner this week, so he had time to build up his coat.

Three in our field: ISH TB cross) unclipped, naked. TB mare, unclipped, 200g rug with neck, TB gelding (ex racer), unclipped, 250g rug without neck.

In the worst of the winter the two TBs will go up to 400g with necks, and fat boy ISH will continue unrugged if no rain, but No fill rainsheet if it rains. He's also unrugged in the snow.

And this is Scotland, where it is currently about 3 degrees at night, with wind chill and regular heavy rain, going up to about 6 or 7 degrees during the day. Same trio have happily lived out in the weeks of snow with temps down to -17.

TBs are hardier than they let on ;)
Last winter - car said it was -5...

I don't have one now but I did last winter! never again, but he was old (19, but not rideable anymore, ruined from racing days) and in bad condition when I got him!

He just had 3 good warm feeds a day! he had a weatherbeeta taka heavy weight combo for the really cold days and a few medium with neck covers for this sort of weather! and plenty of hay.

He wouldn't be stabled either but I really think it would have been the best thing for him! and I am very anti stabling unless necessary! my 27yr old mare lives out 24/7 and has done for the last 9ish years, so by no means am I a wimp and think all horses should be stabled!

Yep, a couple of the liveries used to think I was mean, one even said 'are you sure he's HAPPY living out?'.. I just used to smile, rug and feed well and carry on with it.

W's clipped (rather pointlessly as he's now broken) and has a fleece with a HW on top. He's plenty happy if he's out with company and got lots of hay/grass. There is the odd day where I think he'd rather be in, but 95% of the time he's settled and happy :)

My 25 yr old TB mare lives out, like others on this thread she hates being in. She has ad lib hay, is unclipped and currently is in a 100g without a neck as it is below 0 and snowy now. The neck and a fleece under rug will go on when it hits -15, and a 300g liner for -20 and below. She is worked all winter and gets her senior mix in a warm mash with oil and carrots once a day. She is happy and one of the few rugged at all on my yard!

Got two fully clipped in 200g amigo with necks, and one purely in a rainsheet to keep her clean if anyone comes to try her as she's for sale (unclipped) It's freezing here and the wind is just icy!

mine was out 24/7 until last week (yard rules mean he's now in at night until the spring). He's unclipped and only had a no-fill rain sheet (no neck) on to keep him clean enough to ride when I have limited time in the mornings. He has happy as larry, but from experience he'd have been completely fine naked too.

If they're clipped it's a bit different, but if they're hairy they are actually designed to live outdoors without a duvet ;) Do what suits you and your horse :)

2 TBs living out.
My mare is in a fairly heavyweight turnout with a neck right now. (Shires Tempest Plus 2000D 400g Combo)
SIL gelding who I look after is in a mediumweight with a thin stable underneath.
Both are pansies and would be inside if the stables had been up on schedule (was 1st august, now told 23rd november.. we'll see )

Hahah... I read this and had a little panic, then realised your in Canada! :) if it ever hits minus 20 here in uk I'm moving to the tropics! :)

My two ex-racers live out and love it :D
They do have decent rugs and they have lots of hay but are very happy chappies.
Only time i bring them in is if we have continuous cold heavy rain and then they come in for a lie down and a snooze.

Steps spent her first night out last night. She has a very nice warm shires rug ( great deals at two times at the mo). She coped fine but when she came in for a couple of hours today she went in her stable and had a lie down and wrapped herself in the warm straw.

I know lots that live out, my old loan horse is a chunkyish tb and just has a lw on sometimes, a lot of them get so stressy it is better for them, I'd have felt bad keeping him in as he is a frantic cribber, and what with the sensitive constitution I think it is better for their digestive system.

I've got 2 tb's living out one is wearing a 200 g no neck amigo. The other is naked as rugs stress her out. Since I started having horses living out 24/7 a couple of years ago I would never go back to stables. No mucking out and happy horses.

My 6 year old tb lives out, rugged with a 400g Derby House full neck & he is as warm as toast! I had him. On loan originally and his owners were quite adamant that he stayed in all winter! Circumstances changed & I now own him & he hasn't been stabled (apart from tacking up, grooming etc). He is so chilled with his life now it's wonderful. At our DIY yard there are only four horses out of 22 that are living out 24/7. The rest all come in overnight & some from early afternoon to late morning. I own two of the four & another lady has the other two. The four of them are the easiest to deal with on the yard too! They also don't have a strict exercise regime either!
