do you put them over your horses muddy legs when they come in, or do you hose your horses legs off then put them on?

I know people who do the first option, but imagine all that washing muddy leg wraps will take its toll on them!

I don't have any but I would def wash off thoroughly first. Otherwise the warmth will cause the pores in the horses legs to open and the bacteria from the mud wouldn't do any good at all! I would have thought this was along the same lines as washing horses legs with warm water...

Yep thats what Im going to do, i was just wondering why people put them on over muddy legs, because I can think of nothing worse than having to wash the wraps every day in winter and have them dry by the night, they would probably only last one season!
 
you wash the legs first then put them on - otherwise they are a bit pointless if you put them onto mud, as when the mud dries it could cause sores on the legs if they start rubbing.
 
Yep thats what i thought, seems pretty common practice though.

I know someone who does it whose horse is scared of the hose, surely you would just be better off leaving the mud on to dry naturally then,not putting wraps over the top of it.

I always wash legs before putting them on, BUT they can be used on muddy legs - idea is they draw the moisture away from the leg, dry the mud and it just falls off in the morning. Have done this once or twice just to see and it does work and the wraps actually don't getting yukky - by the morning the mud falls off them too and you can just brush them off.

I love these wraps - since using them, my mare has not had one single incident of mudfever and I don't have to use barrier creams etc when she goes out.

We don't wash their legs first, and as Doublethyme says the mud brushes off of the wraps as well as the horse's legs.
