People with young teenagers - HELP!

I have a lovely little loaner for my horse, she is wonderful, super keen, gentle and rides my boy with light touch and is a general all round good egg :)

It is her birthday soon, and I would like to take her out with the horse to do something fun. I initially thought about Aintree, as i know they run these 'pony fun days' in the school holidays (they do all kinds of things, mounted games, clear rounds, hunter trails etc) and i have friends whose children have attended although these children were 10 and 8 so maybe a little bit young for a very nearly 13 year old! But, in any case Aintree is closed now for the National until May, so that plan is scrapped anyway.:(

So what would a young teen like to do... are there pony days run by anyone other than the pony club?

She is not a pony club member, and i cant really take her out to a little show (even though i know she would LOVE that) as she hasnt got any of the correct dress required, and she is a tiny wee slip of a thing, so my clobber isnt going to fit her!

So i need a bit of help please, what would a nearly 13 year old like to do for a day with 'her' horse??:)

Many thanks!:)

when I was 13 (or any age actually :p) I would have loved a days XC schooling, a lovely long beach ride (maybe with friends riding if possible), or a days riding up the mountains/through forestry :) Or just hire an arena with lots of show jumps/portable xc jumps to play around with for a couple hours and have some fun?

What exactly is a sponsored ride? Sorry for the stupid question!

I think a bit of xc schooling might be a good idea actually! I could pretty easily get to kelsall or somerford.
I can only take one horse in my lorry as its a 3.5t and would be over weight with two, so she would have to be mounted on her own - obviously me and her parents would be there too... but beach and forest are out, as I wouldnt want her to go off on her own, and it would be a bit tight getting her all the way to the beach only for her to have to walk with us!

I was thinking it might be fun for her to do some kind of kids event where she could meet other kids with ponies and have a bit of fun, but i guess unless youre in the pony club there isnt much around that caters for that?

What a lovely thought for her..If you look at all your local venues, usually a visiting trainer will do Clinics with group sessions, SJ, Dressage or X country, and would do their best to put her in a similar age & ability group.

If she wants to do some competing, a second hand jacket? For the child sized they come in at under £35 quite often?

Oooh i hadnt thought about that Lolo, I am not sure what size she is though, and jackets come in weird inch measurements - i might be able to see what size her coat is when she takes it off to ride later!

Are there any relaxed dress 'have a go' shows around you? I know we hold them as do some venues around us (s.yorks) & we don't require show dress so that anyone can have a try at competing x

Find a sponsored ride which some of her friends are going to so she can ride with them. It's usually about 10-20 miles mainly off road on a pre-arranged route with optional jumps, in aid of charity, with a 20 pounds entry fee and all you need are safe tack and riding clothes. There are regular check points through the route and sometimes a place for spectators half way. There is often a photographer too. I've been to loads on my own and always find people (random strangers generally) to ride with for a while on my way round, until one of you wants to go faster than the other then you split up again.

Defo something like a fun ride or a hiring a xc course for a play.

In shropshire we have fun rides virtually every weekend throughout the summer - they are run by local hunts or charities, and are around 10 miles long with optional jumps. My son loves doing them.

Have a look on The Riding Diary website as usually advertises them.

What a lovely thing to do! If you are anyway near a beach then she could quite easily have fun with you and her parents on foot - as long as the horse isn't nappy she can ride away from you, come back, do circles and mess around in the shallows. You will be able to see her and anything that happens easily, unlike a forest ride.

Otherwise xc schooling sounds great :)

Do you know any one that has a jacket you could borrow? It doesn't have to be a perfect fit.

Is there any reason she would only be able to walk with you on the beach? You and her parents could sit down with a picnic and just watch her doing what ever, she could go a long way without being out of sight.

I would have to say showing her "own" horse would be so special and as someone has already said a second hand maids jacket should be cheap enough to find ebay always has bargains if you can get hold of her size.

I used to wear my school shirt, tie and blazer for local shows when I was a teenager and couldn't afford a jacket. No-one ever said anything!

Little show would be amazing I'm sure!!

If you are on a yard perhaps set up a small show with other liveries that she can take part in. Maybe a jump class then an in hand one of fancy dress.

Second the beach ride - and take lots of pictures :). Or . . . depending on your budget . . . one of those experience days where you get to do archery on horseback, jousting, etc. I also like the idea of buying her a show jacket and/or finding a small local "have a go" show for her to . . . well . . . have a go!

How lovely of you to want to do this for her :).

Thanks everyone, some great ideas here :)

I think the fun ride/ sponsored ride would be great except I dont think she has any friends with horses! She learnt to ride and still rides at a riding school, but i dont think she has any 'friends' there really. Thats part of the reason i thought a 'pony club' day might be fun for her as she hasn't really experienced fun with young peope her age before. My yard is very small so no possibility of organising a mini show there :(

I am leaning towards xc outing, or local competition - the beach although i would love to take her, i just think she is still a little bit novicey - way more my horses fault than hers- but my horse gets a tad bit excitable in open space, and I know he would be a handful for her without horsey company.

If you want to do something different other than a beach ride or x country session you could see if there is a well-known rider lives near you & book a lesson with them or maybe if theres a stud or stable i.e. racing yard that may allow you to visit for your daughters special day. Other than that if she's ever fancied riding western riding or side saddle there should be a riding school or instructor that specialise in these areas of riding. Hope she as a fab day whatever you decide.

My regular teenage visitors keep requesting a beach ride, or a forest ride, look for a pleasure ride near you, they normally get a rosette. If you need a show jacket, I have two going spare from last year for inhand, one of each sex, pm me if you want them, I'd need to check the sizes, but I think the lasses is an 8 or 10
