Yes,dont ride as its too dark by time finished work and field too wet.I do have access to a manage down the road but its too risky IMHO to hack there along road in dark.Mine are usually off from early december to mid feb dependant on weather.
Last winter I hacked out around the farm, occasionaly down the roads and boxed over to a school near by once every week or two. I honestly hate the winter so much, I genuinelys started to wonder if I suffer from seasonal deppression! I will hopefully be hunting this winter but if not I may just give the man a couple of months fending for himself in the field! Which will mean: getting up at 6am to feed him, cleaning out the barn he uses as a field shelter/stable, putting a bale of hay out then in the evening back again for a 10 min drive along the icy rodes to repeat the proccess >:| Winter makes me angry!
Reg has about 6-8 weeks off every year. This is now between mid-November to the start of January, which cuts the worst of the winter out. The rest of his fitness is hacking during the day (my sister is at college so comes home in her frees to ride), with lessons once a week at a school nearby- virtually no difference to his summer schedule!
I'm lucky that I have quite a few days off mid week, so ride then. I do tend to give up in the worst of the winter - its very hilly here, and we live in a very rural area, where the roads aren't always gritted, and its just not worth it hacking out and risking the horses slipping..
Mine are barefoot (not as sleepy) and get booted and lit up to the eyeballs to hack out all winter either ride and lead or on their own. and do my schooling at weekends or when i start late at work i will school in the mornings. Seems to work fine!
Hacking only for us during the winter. Start as soon as the frost on the roads has melted around 11am and try to get two ridden, or ride and lead at the same time. Have OH to ride with me at weekends, which is great. Ice stops play. Rain and wind doesn't, but last winter they must have had 5 weeks lazing in the field during the worst of the winter weather.
thats what im scared of, not being able to work my beast of a horse who turns in to a monster out of work, might as well have him feral haha but this year is my first with out a school so could be interesting, previous yard had an indoor school so defo gonna miss it this winter
I can just about squeeze a hack in in the daylight before work, fortunately there is a bridleway directly opp yard so even if it's just getting light we skip across to that. Hire a school once a week to practice non hooning activities!
Hardly have time to ride once i get back from school but did ride in some of the fields in the snow last year but by November it's just too dark once i get home. Im hoping my free session at school will be at the right time to ride the horses as they didnt get much work last winter.
Even when I've got an out door school the weather stops use of it so I'm thinking he could just have dec to feb off. Pleased to here it works for others
I just ride at the weekends in the winter, and sometimes that's only once a week. We manage fine with that but she has had to have a couple of weeks off due to icy roads, and she turned into a right little madam.
