For ages a family who we have know for ages and my daughter teaches their children, have been hoping that we would have their tiny pony for my granddaughter when she was old enough. The pony is a dartmoor and quite old and has had laminitis. We decided to have it for her 2nd birthday but were worried as she is very tender on her feet. Their farrier put shoes on and she was still lame on stones. We wanted her on loan but they said they would rather we paid a small sum and owned her as they didn't want her back when we fininshed with her.We said we would try her and get our farrier to check her feet. He said that she had had laminitis quite badly but he would work on her feet and she may come sound. They wanted £250 for her tack and £300 for her. We said that as we would have to spend quite alot on her feet we would only pay a token sum of £100 and £250 for the tack and if she comes sound give them another £100 .She would have a good home for life and be looked after well. This was agreed and we paid them £350.
Her mane was VERY long so we pulled it as she had a huge crest and it was being pulled over and she was sweating under the mane.We also trimmed her heels, she could not be shown as a mountain and moorland as she is old and unsound. She was going out in a small paddock all day .Ridden[ led ],half an hour a day given 2 small feeds a day and 1 section of well soaked hay at night. She was stabled on a shredded paper bed.We had her 2 weeks and they visited her at 5.30 pm without telling us[ no one lives at our stables] and left us messages saying they were devestated that we had pulled her mane. They then came up the next morning at 8 am[ before we got there] and gave her dry hay from our barn. They phoned in the afternoon and started complaining about us trimming her heels.
We said it was now our pony and we did it for her comfort and really it had nothing to do with them and would they please not feed her extra food. They said they were concerned about her and we did not own her only her tack. They still had the passport as when we asked for it they said it had to be sent to the dartmoor pony society to change.
We told them to come and fetch the pony back and return our money, they had nagged us to have the pony and now they were interfering. They said they were worried we would get it sound and sell it for more money. We repeated come and fetch her back.
They have collected her and good ridens. Both my daughter and I have our BHSAI and my daughter has her PC A, we still have her 13.2 hh pony who has been on loan with us for nearly 20 years[ 10 in retirement] so it would have had a lovely home for life but they wanted to keep control . The pony was a sweet heart and I hope they control its diet but I couldn't put up with that

Good god......just one word to describe them......nutters!

You are better of out of this situation as it would have become too much. Shame about the pony though.

I know someone like that who will never see that she is wrong. Trouble is they believe they are right and to be honest you did the right thing by walking away. Shame for the pony though.

What a shame, the odds are good that they won't look after the poor old pony properly, and she certainly won't have the lovely home she would have had with you.

This is a salutory reminder that whenever you buy or sell a pony, even at these prices, to always get a signed receipt for the money saying that the pony now belongs to you, even if you don't get the passport immediately, and no matter how well you know the other party.

Some people just can't let go. You've done the right thing. Shame for the pony though, as the other people obviously didn't have a clue.
Fancy saying they thought you'd get it sound and then sell it on when it was their own crappy management of the pony that meant it was lame in the first place!

And now I bet those people will be blabbing to everyone about you and how they had to rescue their pony back - thats what happened to us!

Sounds to me that the pony needss a good veterinary check up to firstly determine what is causing the lameness. i.e Is the pony still suffering from Laminitis or the consequences of it or possible because it is old is it suffering from Cushings in which case it will require medication.

People know us too well and know how well ours are looked after,I'm afraid we don't like long[over a foot] manes and hairy heels. We will live and learn, we really couldn't put up with someone coming on to the yard and interfering,we really only wanted a pony on loan they insisted that we bought it so that we wouldn't send it back. We would not agree to sign a form to say we would not sell it ever ,as you never know whats around the corner. But we agreed to pay a token sum and really do our best to keep it , as we have our other one.At no time was it mentioned that they still wanted to part own it, which I think they thought they did.
They tried to patch it up and wanted us to keep it and let its heels grow! But no way were we willing to keep it as it would cause too many problems further down the line.
We have known the people for 20 years but you just never know and you need every thing in triplicate and signed.
Such a fuss over a pulled mane , can't do with that!!!!!!!!!

You have, without doubt, done the right thing. I feel so sorry for the poor pony though
