I have a shetland that has one and a half pergolide tablets daily for his cushings, these have made alot of difference to his health, but I am having difficulty getting the tablets administered, I have hidden them in everything from apples to bread, sometimes it works for a few days and then he refuses everything i offer, if i crush it in to his feeds he wont touch it at all, polos worked for 2 weeks now he wont touch any mints at all, tried bread and jam with limited results, have syringed it down too but he had a fit and I'd rather find a less stressful way, running out of ideas, he is very clever and has a long memory, once something fails he totally refuses everything.........
help.

Sorry to hear about your woes. I had the same trouble with my horse who is an absolute menace with all medicine and wormers. I tried all sorts, just like you, but I found that he will take his tablet in some Coolmix which is quite gritty and sugery so he doesn't seem to taste it or feel it in his mouth. I usually break the tablet in half first and then throw it all in. If I were you I would give him a small amount of coolmix first without tablet and then try using half a tablet first inside the mix and then give him another lot with the rest of the tablet.
I also have to give him one sachet of Bute per day which is put in small bran mash mixed with a spoonful of sugarbeet and and spoonful of apple sauce.
My old horse (now long since gone) used get his tablet put inside his mouth between the gums and the cheek where it would just dissolve.
My only other suggestion is to coat some food in golden syrup and then hide the tablet in that.
Good luck.

hi,

i found exactly the same. my pony will eat it happily with some mix as it is small and i put it on the top so the first bite she scoffs it down with the mix, she doesnt seem to notice it like that!

good luck!

I have used mix in the past, which worked for a week until he bit down on a tablet, then he refused mix as well, most things work untill he tastes the pill, thanks for the suggestion.

Soneone I know has a fussy arab stallion. She fed medication hidden inside jam doughnuts. You can buy a bag of these for £1 at most big supermarkets. Some have apple instead of jam. Might be worth a try.
