Pergolide

Apparently there are currently difficulties in getting Pergolide from the manufacturer, and Hyperdrug who I normally get it from is having trouble to fill the prescription due to lack of stocks, anybody know how else could supply this?

My friends pony was recently diagnosed with cushings, and yes the veterinary supplier couldn't supply. Her vet took a prescription to local boots store and got it that way. Hope that helps

Hmmm that is interesting, as there was an issue about a year ago, when in the States they said that they may be withdrawing it.

I had problems with Hyperdrug selling me short dated stock

Have you tried Vets.uk as they appear to be very good and that is where I will be going this time

Thanks, I will try local chemist and then vets Uk.

It has been withdrawn in the US for use in humans as it can cause calcification of the heart valves which caused supply problems over there, but the short supply here seems to be due to the manufacturer recalling a batch

yup local chemists for humans are great as it is exaclty the same drug (as pergoldie is a human drug! its not actually licensed for horses! hehe but it works so who cares!!!) but just be aware if you get an arsey pharmacist you may have to explain (and show note from vet saying horse needs pergolide!) .

No, Pergolide is not licensed for the treatment of Cushings in horses, but as there is no drug licensed for this purpose it is perfectly fine to prescribe it according to the prescription cascade, so the pharmacist shouldn't give you any hassle, as long as the script is filled correctly.

Anyway, just managed to get hold of 50 Tabl. so that will keep us going for a while, and hopefully the problem will be sorted by then as there aren't too many alternatives.

I sometimes have difficulty getting potassium bromide for my horse via the vet's suppliers, so I just take a prescription round to Boots who use a different suppliers. The pharmacist there is used to me now!

I wasn'e able to get 1mg ones last time and had 250mcg instead. Today tho the 1mg were in stock at the wholesalers, so presume the supply is flowing again.

PS. You'll always need a Vets prescrption to get it from the Chemist, or internet supplier. Its a POM drug.
