Hi, my 26 years old horse has equine cushing disease. We are from the Czech Republic and here in the Czech Republic the drug pegolide mesylate is very expensive. The treatment costs about 26O pounds monthly. It is more than half of my monthly salary and so I can not afford it. But I would like to help my horse. And I found, that Pergolide is much more cheaper in the Great Britain. So I would like to ask you: Is it possible to buy Pergolide in the Great Britain in the chemist or is it necessary to have a prescription from an english vet? Please apologize my not good english.

Pergolide is prescription only in the UK I'm afraid. I am not sure exactly how to go about importing it because different countries have different laws but based on how it works in the UK you would need a prescription from your vet in Czech Republic and they would have to apply for an import liscence from your government.

I remember buying pergolide with a vet's prescription and it was approx £1 a tablet. Only I can't remember what size the tablet was, so that's not much help to you!

How many is your horse on and what dose?

My vet says that 2-3 mg should be enough, Libarek is quite big horse. But the treatment with pergolid in the Czech Republic is very expansive. Common people can not afford it. So I am looking for, how to get this medicine in foreign states. Now I found one chemist in the Netherlands - they have acceptable price of pergolid and they should accept the Czech prescription. I hope we will be successful because Libarek deserves it. Thank you for your answers.

You might find that a lower dose is effective, as studies have shown that the the size of a horse has no bearing on the effective dose.

I routinely start horses on 0.5mg and increase it to 1mg if no improvement is seen in the first month or so. Only rarely do I treat a horse that requires a higher dose than this.
