I just wonder if any of you have horses on Periactin tablets, and if so have you got them online? I've been trying to find a cheaper supply than from the vet. The cheapest I've found is £1.37 for 30 x 4mg tablets, but I had to fill in a funny questionnaire and am not sure they will supply (it hasn't asked for a prescription yet...) them so am waiting with fingers crossed for them to arrive.

On the subject of Periactin, mine is on 30 tabs twice a day at the mo (loading does for 3 weeks) but I'm looking to reduce the dose - has anyone else managed to reduce their dosage? And to what level?

Thanks guys x

Hi there. I used Periactin for my old Cushings lad who died in '98. Not so much use of on line stuff then but I did a deal with the local pharmacy and bought the tablets from them in bulk which they ordered for me. I don't think I needed a prescription though when we moved on to Pergolide I also purchased through the pharmacy but did have a prescription then. I can't remember how much I paid but heaps cheaper than the vet. Might be worth asking at your local chemist especially if a small one rather than chain.
I didn't reduce the dose while he was on Periactin. I seem to remember he was on 45 tablets a day which was a real pain pushing them out of the blister packs!

Good luck!

Thanks DiggerandWill,

It seems Periactin is used for so many illnesses - Cushings, apetite booster in dogs, and for my boy it is for headshaking.

I do have a local small friendly pharmacy so will pop in and have a chat, they always seem happy to help it they can.

Yep, popping 30 tabs out of the blister packs morning and night is a pain - not to mention my mum has started grumbling that she can't find her pestle and mortar!

X

My vet prescribed my 16.1hh horse 10 /day and that got the nose irritation sorted really fast. The periactin costs me nz$15/ day and that is from the vet giving them to me at cost, so I'm hoping to get a cheaper source. Can anyone help?

My understanding (about a year ago when I last tried) was that the manufacturer of Periactin had lost their licence to produce it, and there wasn't (at that time) an alternative source. i don't know if it's now available again. This was in the UK by the way. You could try the internet for Cyproheptadine (the other name for Periactin) to see if you can find a supplier where you are. Good luck with it.
