Hello,

I am currently horse sitting for a good friend who is the proud owner of a gorgeous 22year old warmblood. He was recently (one week ago) diagnosed with Perotinitus, and at times it has been touch and go. He's pulled through remarkably well and seems to be responding well to the treatment. I have two concerns which have arisen since looking after him myself and having spoken to the vet she has echoed our own thoughts, but just wondered if anyone else could throw some ideas at me. It might be worth noting at this point the cause of the Perotinitus has not yet be identified and vet seems unconcerned with finding out at this stage.

Firstly, he is completely off his food. Drinking moderately, but will only eat when hand grazed. Picking at hay, but has no interest in hard feed. In 4 days he has eaten 4 scoops of weight gain. On its own, no chaff or beat as simply wont look at it if it's mixed with anything else. I know this is not ideal, but speaking to vet she seems to think that anything we can get him to eat is better than nothing. With the high protein in weight gain, should we be worrying about his liver and possible damage that may have already been caused? Vet seems to think not, would be grateful of other opinions, or ideas of how we can get food into him. We gave tried 3x different types of beat, 4 x different chaffs and 4 x different mixes.... Linseed, alfalfa.. Apples, carrots, mint, oil. Hay, haylage. I know it's so important that he has some fibre as he needs to poop, but I feel we're fighting a loosing battle- Any suggestions gratefully received.

In addition, he has developed 3 sarcoids. 2 on his penis and one on his shoulder. All about the size of a 1p and in my non-vetinary opinion, they appear to be nodular- sarcoids. To my knowledge he hasn't suffered before. Is there any link, should we be thinking about cancerous links given horses ages and the still prominent question over the cause of the Perotinitus. Any suggestions welcome. Hope Im being pessimistic here.

Thank you for reading and grateful of all replies.
